You say you don't look with it compared to your friends ever thought of asking them for some tips? Or are you too embarrassed? If so do like Ponungalungb said and buy some sort of male fashion magazine and try out some of the looks in there that you think will suit you. Going shopping with some female friends is also a good idea (as Dragonette
said) I'm sure they'd really enjoy picking out clothes for you.
This may seem girly but since you want to look 'with it' I suggest a day of shopping. Window shop at first to see what you like, what suits you and what doesn't and when you are sure of what to buy go back the next time and buy it. Also make sure to pick up things off the rack that you wouldn't normally go for, try something different. You never know, it might actually look good on you.As for gelling your hair, how about practicing in the mirror when you have time (especially when bored) and just play around until you master a hairstyle that actually works for you. Or use what you see in a magazine as a guideline. I've come up with many hairstyles for myself
from doing that. :)

It depends on your hair colour, but usually a smart pair of jeans and a shirt (top 2/3 buttons undone and untucked) look good. The most important thing to looking 'with it' though is to find your own style and wear it like you love it. If you ooze confidence in what you wear, and can show people that you are comfortable with it, you will be more cool than all the trend-followers in the world!Good Luckxxx

If you have any good female friends you can ask one of them to go shopping with you, they'll probably give you some great tips =)

Get a copy of GQ and check out the men's apparel and hair styles. Try to emulate any model's look. Pick out a model who has a similar head shape and take the magazine with you the next time you get your hair styled. You'll be looking "GQ" before you know it.
Good luck!
