Why should you wait for him to ask? You ask him out! You know you might regret it if you don't. Bite the bullet and just get it over with. Either he'll say yes and all is good, or he'll say no and you can ask to still be friends. It'll be uncomfortable for a bit afterward, but at least you'll know!
