How can I determine if I'm destined to be heavy?

A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I am so sick of being a fat, disgusting piglet... It's gotten to the point that looking in the mirror makes me crazy. I'm 29 and don't want to speculate about how much I weigh but it revolts me even look at my reflection. Looking at the big sloppy rolls of fat on my stomach and thighs drives me mad. I resemble Slimer (remember Slimer from Ghostbusters?) and nothing hangs right on me.

I feel jealous when I see people who can wear sexy clothes and pull them off and here I am, a disgusting baby elephant.

I would like to lose weight but I'm so scared that I'll discover that I'm one of the people who just can't. I don't know what I'll do if I'm stuck like this forever.

I want to something about it but I am so afraid that I'll find out I'm genetically programmed to be unable to lose weight.

Today someone asked me if I was a 12 and I just wanted to cry. I am so sick and tired of feeling bad about myself.

How do I know if I'm destined to be a fat pig or if I can do something about it?

Thanks.

wonderingcat agony auntBuy DVDs on Salsa - or Merengue Dancing instructions. Look for them in flea markets, thrift shops, garage sales. Get a few friends together and practice. I did that and got very toned in just 1 month ... I did not lose weight but that was because I ate more after each "session" with friends LOL (but I also did not gain any single ounce of weight! I perspired like a pig everytimne we danced .. even though I was not well coordinated and I kept stepping on someone's toes. I still can't dance Salsa to save my life but I had sooo much fun doing it!

Don't think of "skinny", or "slim". Think HEALTHY. Check/calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) and start eating a balanced diet. Some people believe that "Food Combining" method works, some don't. But you can, combine healthy foods. Consult the nearest nutritionist, possibly at a health clinic or a hospital. He/she will be able to draw a plan for you on how to "eat properly". You will probably need to stick to a "set menu" for a month or two based on the nutritionist's plan of menu. Then after that, you can start planning your own based on that (with variations).

My birth parents were both extra plus sizes (sigh) and my birth siblings apparently are also plus sizes. I was brought up eating healthy by my adopted parents, and my BMI is 22.5 ... well within the normal Caucasian range (though I was underweight in college). And I need to stay in this range as an Asian, the "risk" starts at BMI of 23!!

I still have a bit of a spare tire around my tummy/waist area ... normal for women my age. But people say I look 10-15 years younger than my real age! Yaaayyyyy ....

You can lose the "baby fat" by simple cardio exercises on treadmill and/or stationary bike for 30-60 minutes daily. Regular sit ups (50-100 crunches) every other day helps tone your upper thigh and tummy muscles (even with your legs bent to ease pressure on your back).

Remember, you need:

== Roughage - vegetables, fruits for healthy digestion as well as pro-vitamins

== Protein (animals, some fruits, some nuts) for your muscle mass

== Fats (animals, some fruits) for your protective layers of your nerve cells, insulation, and storage of energy

== Sugars (carbs, fruits, some veg) for your energy

Good luck! Eat well, live well!

ArmyMedic agony auntWii fit! Playing a computer game in your living room for half an hour a day, in the privacy of your own home. Once you realise you can do the exercises on there, venture in to the real world.

Make sure before you start exercising or dieting, to make sure you speak to a doctor for a check up and some advise.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (1 March 2009):

I LOVE dancing!

I took some classes over the summer and I am looking into some more classes. I loved it, but the trouble was the price... I am saving for grad school tuition and the studio charges $200 (USD) for five lessons or something like that.

I used to do martial arts and it didn't seem like exercise, again if it weren't for the cost (and my grad school tuition problem) I would go back to that.

Any ideas please?

One last thing: weight training and keeping fit takes will power. More often than not, it WILL get boring. Shove some earphones in your ear, play your favorite sets of tunes and exercise. If you're riding a bike outside, don't wear earphones.

Key point: stay focused and keep at it, but don't overdo it.

Get out of that damn mentality of 'destined to be fat'. If you're sick and tired of it, do something about it. Don't just sit behind a computer desk and vent at a web site.

There is no such thing as a person that can't lose weight. People who can't lose weight are those whom are either A) psychologically killing themselves with "what if" factors and not doing anything about it or B) not doing it right.

Losing weight does NOT equate to eating nothing. Losing weight DOES equal to eating proportionate meals that compliment your exercises.

If you really really really really want to get fit and lose your excess weight, go to a trainer. If you can't afford one, Google "cardio exercises" and also look up "eating healthy". Eating only a plate of salad a day is NOT healthy. Eating a balanced 'diet' is healthy.

Carbs to give you energy, protein to maintain and repair muscles.

Get on your bike, no, not your hamster wheel. I'm talking about that thing covered with cobwebs and dust with wheels and handle bars. Get on it and ride. Learn to swim. Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit. Dancing is also a great way to lose fat. Yoga is awesome.
