 It could be a whole bunch of things that are the reasoning behind this guy freaking out on you.
* Maybe he's liked you for so long and now you have responded, he may be panicking that hes going to screw it up.
* Maybe he has you on a bit of a pedestal and is afraid that you may not live up to his 'ideal' of you.
* Maybe it wasn't a secret crush at all and you could have misread the signs?
* Maybe he's not in a position to date right now and cannot commit to you at this time now he knows you like him back?
Try to relax a little, don't chase him. Guys like to go about these things in their own way and there is little you can do to move things along. He will just see it as pressure and it might put him off. Be calm and relaxed and friendly over it. He will do one of two things. He will either make his move on you, or he won't. Don't try to make him jealous by flirting with other guys in front of him, but if you do find someone else you get on with better...then move on.

Speaking from past experience i would have to say that his probably just a bit nervous and of course his going to not be like this in front of every other girl because there not the girl he likes, its you. He is probably just as confused as you, all this time you had no interest and now you do wat i recommened you do is talk to him about how he feels for you and take it slow he might be new at this.
