A reader, anonymous, writes (1 September 2009):

I don't know details about the us laws, but in the uk the leagal age of consent is 16, and if an adult had a sexual relationship with someone below that age, the adult would go to prison for committing statutory rape and have his name put on the sex offenders register for about ten years (i would assume you have a similar offenders register in the us).

Yes, and if he goes to prison he'll likely be treated very badly... and when he gets out he'll be a felon and a sexual preditor. His life will be ruined.

You'll have zero say in this, as the law doesn't allow a minor to say it's ok... the adult must be the smart one here, and there are alot of young guys who have made this mistake... and a few women, as they do occasionally get procecuited as well (check out last months issue of "The economist" for a really scary article of a 16 year old who got busted giving a 15 year old a BJ. She did prison time (6 Months) and her life is runied... can't get a job, can't get a place to live, must inform the police when she moves... and no politician in the world is going to stick up for her for fear that they'll lose their seat.

VirginMaster agony auntWhere i come from. if you two are caught having sex, or someone tells the police about this kinda thing. even if you were willing or not. yes. he can go to jail. No matter if you were willing.

It's Statutory Law. it says you're a minor. you have to be 16 for sex to be legal. if you two are caught in sex and that. He can be nailed for Statutory Rape.

but if you two aren't having sex, or if no one can really prove that you two are having sex. then you should be okay. just be careful if you do decide to break the law! jail sucks (i was there once for the weekend for public drunkeness)

k_c100 agony auntWhere are you talking to this guy? If it is online there is no guarantee that he is even 18, he could be older!

Talking does not mean he could go to jail but if he has sex with you before you turn 16 then yes this is illegal and he could go to jail for that.
