Basically, don't try any solvents or you'll knacker the leather. It's a job for the professionals by the look of it.
Prepare for war - unless he's the tolerant type. You may be able to claim under your house contents insurance policy, but you'll probably be without anything to sit on for a while!
It's not the end of the world, and worse things happen at sea I'm told.

reader, anonymous, writes (4 July 2008): Try a little nail varnish remover in an unobtrusive place where it won't be noticed. The chances are it will remove the dye from the leather, but you won't really know unless you try it. Maybe once it's thoroughly dried out it might break away from the leather to some extent with a little manipulation of the leather or some gentle scraping with something like a butter knife.

Try scraping it off with a not too sharp object. And if that doesn't work, try dabbing a little bit of nail polish remover over a small area not clearly in sight and see if the leather changes colour. If not, start dabbing the affected areas with the nailpolish remover. Only a little bit at a time though. Don't use too much.
