We text each other daily even though only 2 or 3 words – just to say hi and sometimes more than just to say hi... He has booked himself away on expedience for a week with the forces. Up to date I haven’t heard from him yet as he was supposed to be back last week. I don’t know whether to text him to say hi or shall I leave it to him to text me as I don’t want him to think that I’m clingy or needy. Your views will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I would also give it another week then a shot text, if he doesn't react I would simply assume that he isn't interested and move on.

OR
He's in the man cave. Just needs time to recoup/recharge from whatever stresses that have him appearing to be reclusive.
Give it another week. IF you haven't heard back. Send a hey hope all is well.
I would move on and keep dating. I tend to avoid men in the forces/army. They are not as reliable as local, present, available men.
;)

if he was supposed to be back a week ago a text to ask 'how was your trip" (depending on what expedience with the forces means) would not be clingy or needy.
the issue is... if he is back a week and did not contact you, they he's just not that into you dear .

What is "expedience with the forces"??
Maybe his stay was extended, who knows?
I'd wait one more week and if you don't hear from him before then, send an email.
Good luck.
