The Realist is right. I'd also be willing to bet he's interested in you, and trying to gauge if you're interested too. Unless you guys are long term friends, this is one of those segway things many guys use to cheat on their GF's.

I would say that he means that he cares about this girl but emotional connection isn't there to be romantic. In other words he has fun hanging out with her but can't see it being any more than that.
