CindyCares agony aunt Adding the smirk and the derogatory tone, probably it was not a compliment, I guess he found you a bit too prim and proper, or not flashy enough, for his tastes. The hairstyle you describe sounds absolutely lovely to me, but says more " good girl " than " vixen ".

Then again probably the guy was drunk , and / or shy/clumsy and tryng to get your attention somehow.

He was very cute, but don't regret him : he sounds like an oaf. Don't you hate when perfect strangers just go ahead and start pawing your hair ?

from original poster:

Daletom. i think you got that right. I think i m leaning to is that he thought i could look more sexy or attractive if i did smth. about my hair. I know i m a pretty woman, but i hardly wear any make up and my hair though beatiful reddish hair is kind of just hang there. Some men actualy were telling me how they love the natural way i look. May be its time to change my hair style, who knows.

i ll look into that. It was just so unussual this remark, and how he almost grabed my hair, a complete stranger, made me thinking, thats all.

You didn't give us enough information to really answer your question.

Like "chigirl" tried to tell you - it may have been a casual remark from an unfamiliar person who's just trying to start a conversation. If so, it's quite unlikely that he'd say ANYTHING that he thought would cast you in a bad light!

It could be coming from somebody who is actually trying to meet a teacher. Maybe, as others hinted, because of some long-suppressed fantasy. Or maybe somebody who is considering entering the profession, and wants a little insight. Or somebody who doesn't know how to vote on the upcoming bond issue, and hopes to get some straight, unfiltered information.

Yeah, in contemporary U.S. culture, there's a lingering stereotype of teachers as being very conservative, plain-looking, unexciting relationship partners. It probably goes back 3 or 4 generations, to a time when teaching was something a woman did while hoping to find a husband . . . and kept doing for decades after she passed "marriageable" age. In THAT context, he may have been trying to say something like, "Your appearance could be more flattering if you'd let me give you some suggestions about how you wear your hair.".

"You look like a teacher." is a phrase I occasionally use to tease my wife with. (In fact she WAS a teacher for quite a few years.) Sometimes I'll say it as she's about to go someplace - and, depending on what the destination is, she'll either be satisfied, or make some change to be more attractive.

Thank you all for answering. Uhm... i don't know, i guess i didn't really like the whole comment including facial expression on him, and how he touched my hair. There was something as one said "deregatory" in a whole thing. It was in a bar also, may be he was drinking, anyway if he was trying to pick me up, he didn't choose a very good line for me. But you all saying its a compliment. I don't know, it left a not very pleasant taste. He was very cute though...

chigirl agony auntDoes it have to mean anything? Maybe that was just his first impression of you and immedeate thought, and nothing less.

You could ask him if thats a good or bad thing. But my guess is it's neither. It's just an observation he made without putting much though to it. Some people fit certain professions, others don't. He made a guess.

O, thanks. He sounded though like it wasnt a compliment, he also said smth. about my hair, asked if i like wearing them this way, which was very odd. I have long wavy hair and i put a clip on a back in a middle, but still wear them long. I don't know he sounded like he said smth.funny, was kind of giggling and very smiley. Thats why i thought that he finds my whole look is not very sexy.

My sister is a school teacher and she is always smartly dressed, well-groomed and professional-looking.

I would take it as a compliment.
