Did he buy gifts for other people? .i.e family, friends etc? If the answer is no then I wouldn't over-analyse too much.
If he did however then there was really no excuse for not getting you anything even a little trinket even if it didn't cost much - atleast the thought would have been there.
Have you discussed this with him? If he goes away again maybe just say in a light hearted way - that you would love something from the country he is going too. Maybe he'll get the hint but don't ask him outright for a gift.Just a little hint should do.

Otherwise, it means nothing.
Where there is no expectation there is no disappointment.

I don't know. If you expect things/gifts maybe tell him before he travels to bring you home a T-shirt/mug/magnet.. whatever.
I don't think it's a big deal.
Maybe he didn't want to seem pushy by buying you something or maybe he is just really sucky at the spontaneous knick knack/gift giving department.

I would say that he is cheap and isn't thinking about you when he is gone. Any time I was away from a gf for a week or more traveling I would find even just something small because I was thinking about them.
