It's called mirroring. People will mirror the expressions and behavior of the person they are looking at. You smile, they smile. Laughter is very contagious.

During conversations there are certain cues that people pick up on. When one person smiles or laughs (granted it is a necessary and socially acceptable reason), most people feel the urge to follow, even if something isn't too funny. It's also a peer pressure in a way, not a negative one, just one that exists. So that is why girls tend to do that. And why you sometimes do it in return. When we see someone laugh or smile, we automatically try to do the same back. Whether it is to return the gesture, or whether it's to feel part of the group, or along the same level as the other members. Whether it be intellectually or socially. I wouldn't worry about it too much. This happens naturally.
Or maybe you just have a great smile and you're a funny person. ;) Either way. It works out.
