Dear Cupid,

Years ago before I started uni I was a keen swimmer. I was on my school team and one of the best.

When I started uni, I joined the team. But after a diet of drinking and take aways I put on about 20lbs. I tried to work hard to lose the weight but ended up putting on a further 10lbs by the end of my freshman year. So instead of the freshman 15 I put on the freshman 30! My coach not only kicked me off the team for being too fat, but kicked me out the squad.

Over the rest of my time at uni I improved my diet a little and still continued to exercise, but I didnt lose any weight - I just stayed the same. SO when I graduated I was 30lbs heavier than when I started - thats more than 2 stone!!

Since graduating from uni, my weight started creeping up and up. I went to the doctor who tested me but gave me the all clear. I have a very healthy diet and exercise lots but still seem to gain weight. Ive tried everything.

Im starting to accept that maybe that since Im getting older maybe my body's ideal weight is fatter than a few years ago. Does this sound right?

It may be that you need to work out harder. If your job is something where you're sat down a lot, then you need to spend more time moving around.

We all put on the pounds as our bodies age, but your still very young! You did however, have quite an active lifestyle which has slowed down, and odds are good when you were at your peak you could eat alot more of what you wanted and get away with it... now, you can't.

To get the weight off your going to have to get your body to feel that it can start loosing the weight. To do that you're going to need to cut out the junk (I've found sugar and all white flower are required to go for me), and hit the veggies hard with a little protein. After a few weeks my body gets to a point where I can loose 3 or 4 pounds a week, and I've been able to shed 50#'s in 6 months w/o a problem. The routine is hard, as sugar inclused all sweats, starches and alcohol (BOO!)...

I don't think a 30 lb weight gain is due to age. You are still very young. I think you are over eating, plain and simple. If you don't burn off the calories you consume daily, your weight will creep up. If you stop swimming and excercising and continue eating the same as when you were working out, you will gain weight.

Simple solution, track the number of calories consumed in a day each and every day and calculate the calories burned through activity and excercise. There are some free websites that can help you track this such as calorieking.com.

Hi French Dimple - thats for the advice.

I did get second advice from doctors. As you get older people do tend to gain a little weight. It seems this has happened a little sooner for me :(

Its been a bit embarrassing when meeting old friends and at family reunions. Im sure you can imagine the things they say, especially since I was so skinny not that long ago.

I got invited back to my school swim team reunion where us old school people race the current school team. Imagine me 60lbs fatter wearing speedos next to my old swim team mates who have stayed skinny. I have a pot belly hanging over the speedos and was soooo much slower than anyone else.

Am I hapy with the way things are? Well, I suppose I knew I wouldnt stay skinny forever. It would have been nice if I had put on this weight a little later in life but oh well...

Hiya,

First of all ask yourself are you happy with the way things are or not? The doctor may have given you the all clear but you could always get a second opinion to see why the weight keeps creeping up. Did you cut back on your drinking as part of the diet?

I think that in the 20s our bodies do get a little flabbier all round... but I think you have to ask yourself what the idea weight for YOU is, and that is also within reason, ie without developing an eating disorder.

I was a bony teenager and looking back I was very slim. I never did any exercise. Now I'm still svelte but despite exercising my body has developed in different ways than when I was in school - I have hips, a bum, etc.

Just think about what your own personal idea weight is, and if you still feel that nothing is working maybe try a few different approaches...I wouldn't give up on it just yet. Best of luck with your next step.
