A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

This isn't a relationship question, but here goes. Lately I have been feeling feelings of depression, my mind goes blank, and it's difficult for me to think about certain things, as in my mind has been working slower lately, I zone out sometimes, and I have problems with organization and losing things. I would think this to be ADD, but that is a condition that people are born with, so Idk what's been happening with me. I am about to graduate college and I don't know why I am getting depressed. I think maybe because I am about to be an independent adult. My husband thinks that I am lacking nutrition. I typed these phrases in google and couldn't find much, not stuff that I thought it was anyways and plus and the search lead to a lot of depression websites, and I was wondering, what do you think it could be? I rarely ever eat fruits and vegetables and I am usually having too much salt on days. I also admit that I could be drinking more water than I am. My mind rarely ever feels clear. Sometimes it's like having a big boulder in my head, with a few cracks or one crack, which is me trying to think about something. It's almost like my brain is dying off or something, or in the process of developing. I just really want to know what's going on. I'm thinking of getting an EEG done soon. Anyways, thanks in advance for your help.

Speaking from a clinically depressed person's point of view, I feel hurt in my heart and in my gut at the worst times.

I want to sleep all the time. I cannot do anything. I sometimes cannot eat. I sit and stare in space.

I think you are experiencing fear and anxiety over your future since you are about ready to go out into the world. You are winding down and about to achieve all you have worked for. No one would know you better than your husband. With the current economy, almost anyone would feel this way. It is normal.

I believe that if you take some steps toward that future, you will feel more in control. I don't know that you haven't. Getting your resume ready, sending it out with a date of availability, reading classified ads, etc.

See a doctor to rule out any medical possibilities.

I started drinking more water, eating more fruits and vegetables, and my mind has been feeling better lately. Still getting little head pains, but the headaches are getting less worse. And my mind feels clear in the morning or less foggy than it was. Don't think I've had a major headache in two days. I am getting screened for ADD in about a week. And one of my friends told me that when he was about to graduate, he felt depressed as well, so I know that I am not alone. We both have no clue what we want to be. Anyways, thanks for the responses. I wasn't really going to stop with google, I just wanted to ponder what it could be. I wasn't trying to "self-diagnose" because I know that is not smart, and I am an intelligent person, so.....was just going to look up some things before I went to the doctor. I have also been having problems with my foot falling asleep when I am jogging, and jogging helped me lose weight, so I've been looking for a doctor to help me with that as well. I called up some doctors some days ago, but never got a response back. I guess I can take my money elsewhere. :-)

Again, thanks for the information. It was VERY helpful.

Whatever it is, see a doctor. That's the best thing to do. Lots of luck.

Jmtmj agony auntGo to a doctor... seriously. I was diagnosed with ADD and depression at age 25 and I felt like you just described. Just because ADD is a condition you have since birth doesnt mean that you havent got it, it just means you've developed systems to deal with it over the years and haven't been diagnosed.

Yeh it could just be a nutritional issue or something else, but trying to self diagnose yourself on google isnt smart. See someone who's trained for many years to diagnose you. For me personally, my doctor said that I had been self medicating myself with a high salt intake my whole life because salt is a natural anti-depressant.

Best of luck.

You need to start taking better care of yourself. Failure to do so can be an indicator of depression. Despression is an odd thing, and people closest to us sometimes simply can NOT see it. It's subtail, but damaging.

I'd see a Dr. and talk to them- most of the drugs used to treat depression are not dangerous and you will more than likely feel better after being on them for 3 or 4 weeks.

Also, please start drinking water... you could be dehidrated, and the symtoms for that is not too nice. headaches, run down... no reason to belive the old wives tail about 1oz for every pound... but 4 to 5 glasses a day is a good thing. Yyou should be going to the bathroom 3 or 4 times a day. if your pee is bright yellow, you need MORE water in your system.

Try eating more veggies, fruit for breakfast, but be aware it has alot of sugar, so best avoided at night.
