The first part of question means he's excited. It doesn't mean love. It can be part of a loving relationship but nothing more on it's own.
As for: "can a boy be in love with a girl but not tell anyone?"
It's possible, if a bit unusual. In your case it sounds like he's trying to distance himself from you to prevent being teased by his friends but that doesn't mean he's not interested.

 The heavy breathing is just what comes with sexual activity. You shouldn't read any kind of romantic feeling into it. That he still looks at you sort of shows that he's still interested, but he's MORE interested in doing what his friends want him to do, which is not get involved with you. If the answer is no then i think you have your answer..Also if he doesn't speak to you this probably indicates that he is only interested in you in a physical way.
