A female Canada age 30-35, *nsustainable1245 writes:

I have a boyfriend of 5 month and we've been having sex, unprotected. We aren't in anyway trying to get pregnant as that may seem like something stupid to say but I am on the pill.

I've only started the pill a month ago, finished that 21 day pack, continued my period 3 days after that on a Wednesday.

5 days after, the following Sunday I started another pack as it says to do. Now my periods are always light and never last more than 5 days.. thank God!

I'm still left concerned during this month of the pill. I resumed the pill that Sunday, the week after, I missed Thursday...then missed Friday, missed Saturday, missed Sunday.

I just forgot because of lack of sleep. 4 nights I've missed the pill, I have 1 week left til I'm due for my next period but I'm now spotting a dark brownish blood. This can't be my period already, can it?

I'm also quite concerned that there could be chance I'm pregnant... my boyfriend once joked that when we have sex after he's been drinking, he can't tell if he came or not.

Should I believe that?

PixiePie agony auntlight spotting is what happens when your body withdraws from the pill. like any drug your body gets used to it has to get used to not having it too.

all the while you are on the pill your periods are not "true" periods, just withdrawals from the pill.

if you get the other symptoms of pregnancy then worry about that then, but for now what you are experiencig is normal, especially if it is dark brown

best wishes

PeanutButter agony auntHeya, first of all I want to say that even if you're on the pill and taking it religiously, you can still fall pregnant, so you should think about using condoms or some other form of contraception too. I learnt this the hard way.

I'm not flaming you for your situation, i'm just letting you know :)

Right now I would be slightly worried that you might be pregnant, but don't stress yourself out over it until you have a positive test in your hand.

All it takes is 1 night of unprotected sex and 1 missed pill to cause a pregnancy. If you missed 4 days then you've an even greater chance to have fallen pregnant.

Light spotting doesn't mean that you are or aren't pregnant but it could well be implantation bleeding or a light period.

When you interrupt your pill, your body can sometimes become confused and unsure what its supposed to be doing! You may just have pushed your cycle off course and be having a ridiculously light period, which might turn into a full flow.

The best thing you could do right now is wait until the date you think you should be due to start your period and if it doesn't appear, or if it is so light it is still more like spotting, take a pregnancy test straight away and see what happens. You might not get a positive test straight away so you might have to so one a week after just to make sure.

If the test comes back negative you can go to your doctor and take a blood test to be 100% sure that you're not pregnant and resume your pill as directed by your doctor and be very careful in the future to avoid this situation.

If it comes back positive, you need to stop taking the pill and go to your doctor for a blood test to confirm the pregnancy and discuss your options for the future.

Whatever happens, i wish you the best of luck
