I think it's never so clear cut as "he does love her if he stands up for her" or "he doesn't love her because he doesn't stand up for her."
I think it's a complex interplay between a man's temperament, his confidence, his feelings of loyalty to his girlfriend, his feelings of loyalty to his family and adult children, etc., and the situations where he's called upon to stand up for her.
Is there a specific situation that you have a question about?

I'm with quiet-echo. It all depends on what I'm expected to defend her about. If I think she's wrong, I'll be there to catch her, but I won't defend her (I'm attracted to women who can defend themselves). We need the context to know for sure what's going on.
