A bit of an open question- do you people think that it is the right thing to do to tell a straight friend of the same sex that you fancy them, or to ignore your felings cos you know nothing will ever happen between the two of you?

I'm sorry, I disagree. Not very helpful, I know. But I'm gay and have been in love with my straight best friend for three years. I told him about two and a half years ago, and he was a bit surprised at first, but not really phased by it, and I would say it strengthened our relationship that I could be that open and honest with him.

It really depends on the kind of friend he is. In my case, it was my best friend, and we trust each other completely, so I could trust him not to react badly to it if I was honest and told him myself, and he trusts me not to act upon it.

Nothing is ever going to happen between the two of you, and as long as he knows you know that, and he's a good friend, he shouldn't react badly to you telling him. On the other hand, if you're not really too close with this guy, I wouldn't say anything to him. You really have to decide how good a friend this guy is.

No don't tell them. It will just make them feel awkward and put strain on your friendship.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 June 2007):

No, don't do it! Agreed with Flowergirl. Telling this friend your feelings, would serve absolutely no purpose to you or to this person, would it. It's a huge risk. It could make your friend feel very uncomfortable knowing that you view them in a romantic way. After that, your friend may give unwanted meaning to every little touch, every bit of eye contact, all that you do and say. Eventually, it would eat away at your friendship, because this friend wouldn't trust that things you say or do are in the interest of the friendship rather than in your own self-interest. Keep this person just as a friend and enjoy the support and love they offer you in a platonic way. Don't say one word. Good luck

flower girl agony auntI personally would say if you know they are straight and nothing is going to come of it then say nothing as it could harm or destroy the friendship you have.

Take care.xx.
