I am pregnant for the 2nd time in 2 years, and I am happy but we don't want anymore kids after this one. Just wondering about people's experience with the i.u.d. Does it really last 5-10 years? Don't tell me to get my tubes tied because I won't get cut open. Reply to this Question Share |

I recommend the five year IUD - called Mirena - because it works in two different ways to prevent pregnancy. The ten year IUD is good but I've heard it causes heavier periods and cramping. With the Mirena, I haven't had a period in four years. Its wonderful!

I work with a group of midwifes and they all sear they are the best thing ever, they all have them and the tails of constant bleeding is very rare, and if it does happen they just remove it.
A number of female friends have them and have done for some years with hassle
Working at a med school I get to sit in on lectures hence the knowledge on a subject usually amiss to males.

You said you dont want to get your tubes tied...just do it. Having kids is much riskier than docs going in and doing such a routine procedure. But if you are still not wanting to go that route have your husband get a vascetomy. Either way someone is going to get fixed. Just don't put foreign medically test objects in you like that. I don't care how safe they say it is your body is going to be bothered by it.

i was told by my doctor that you are better off to get the depot provera shot. the good thing about iud is that you never have to worry about it. because it does last years. about 7 i think. but in some women it does cause many complications. depot is a shot in the arm every 3 months. doesn't hurt and it's a lot safer. it helps with other issues too like endometriosis and severe menstrual cramps as once you start getting the shot, you do not ovulate. (never have your period again) which is great for women that have really bad periods. you should just do some research about the pro's and con's to all birth control. but i do have to say, being cut open to have your tubes tied is really not as bad as people seem to think.
