 Maybe he fears if the relationship doesn't last, and he's intimate with you, he feels it will be even more painful. However, the fact that he's thinking this and pulled away, suggests to me that he has ambivalent feelings about becoming more serious. You have to talk to him and ask why. Communication is very important, especially before you "take it to the next level".

reader, anonymous, writes (14 September 2006): Well this could mean he's not interested in a serious relationship and isn't ready to get too cosy just yet (I don't know how old you are...) but if he's young - well i've found most young men want to have fun before they settle down.
I think yo need to talk to him and find out what he meant only he can answer this for you.
