 Personal view (and let me repeat that, this is my PERSONAL needs in the bedroom, so don't think it covers all men):
I like being able to pursue her, push a little, take some control and even keep her trembling past her limit and bring her to happy exhaustion. But if I am in charge every time, if I have to start things, then decide things, then do everything every time, I feel like she doesn't care at all and is just letting me go because it's easier than explaining why not. I'm fairly confidant my ex didn't fake orgasms (I think, maybe?) but can't be really sure she was terribly interested because she couldn't tell me she needed it and couldn't throw herself at me sometimes.
I am one person, but my preference depends on the day.

But I would think that most men want a woman to show enthusiasm and confidence in bed. Don't be afraid to let him know what you want, and don't be afraid to let him know if you're enjoying it. You don't have to be aggressive, just don't be passive.
And don't be afraid to initiate things either. That's hot as hell.

 No one can give you an answer that will be true of all men. I can tell you, as me, myself and my seven other personalities, that I hate the military and therefore I don't want anyone to act like a sergeant.
I believe many men will say that they like variety, which includes the woman taking the lead, only not a sergeant. Sorry.

 You are never going to figure out ALL men any more than we will figure out ALL women. There is no perfect answer to a question like this.
What I can say is that me and most men I know like a woman who can be dominant and submissive. Every evening is different and if you string a lot of them together with one man you will probably find this to be true yourself. You will also discover many things about what rocks your world too if he is attentive.
