A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey all quick question involving my contraceptive pill, im a bit confused with the information given.

I take the contraceptive pill yasmin, and i started taking my first pill on saturday after my seven week break. Yesterday i went out on the town and hit some clubs and bars with my boyfriend and my best friends for a friends birthday. When me and my boyfriend came home we had sex and went to bed.(Using yasmin as the contraception) We were both pretty drunk and when i woke up this morning i had the hangover from hell. I take my pill at seven o clock every morning as thats the time im usually up for uni. I took my pill at quarter to seven, and at half 8ish i was sick. I know this affects the way its absorbed into your blood stream. So i read my pill leaflet and it says to use extra protection for a week and treat it as a missed pill, yet i went on the fpa's (family planning association) information on net doctor, and it says that the pill leaflet is out of date.

It says that if your sick more than 2 hours after taking a pill, (which i was ) then when your feeling better take another pill and then take tomorrows pill at your normal time and your contraceptive protection shouldnt be affected.

When i spoke to my older sister about it though she seemed to think i would need to take the morning after pill as i had sex yesterday, it mentions nothing in the pill leaflet though, and nothing on net doctors website.

So my question is do i need the morning after pill? Am i fully protected against pregnancy as i took another pill at half ten when i felt better, or do i need to use extra protection for a week?

Here's the net doctors website aswell, just so you can see what it says and if you think its reliable!

Thanks in advance! x

k_c100 agony auntYou are protected for any times you had sex prior to being sick, but you may want to use extra protection for the next 7 days if you do have sex again.

Try and think of it this way, you take your pill at 7am and you are protected until 7am the next day. Then you need to take your next pill. So because you had sex within the 24 hours of a normal day when you took your pill at your usual 7am and everything was fine - this has covered you when you had sex. However you are not fully covered for sex after that point seen as it was only an hour and 45 mins after you took your pill when you were sick.

I would say no you do not need the morning after pill, you probably could get away with having sex without condoms but there is a small risk you could get pregnant so maybe it would be best not to chance it. It is up to you though - you wont have gotten pregnant from having sex on your drunken night, but there is a small chance you could get pregnant within the next 7 days due to being sick afterwards. Totally up to you whether you decide to use extra protection - it cant hurt but then again the chances of getting pregnant are pretty slim! Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I hope this helps and good luck!

rambini agony auntim on yasmin too - if u took the pill correctly every day up until yesterday, and then you took todays pill at half past 10am, and were not sick after, then you will still be protected. Although the pill should be taken at the same time every day, a few hours will not make a difference.

however if you are worried you can still use extra protection.

Best of luck!
