Do I have appendicitis?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

MOD NOTE: Poster, I am approving this, but PLEASE understand we are NOT doctors on here and NO ONE can make a diagnosis over the internet. You are just going to get general opinions.

I think I might have appendicitis but I can't be too sure. On June 17th, after waking up, I experienced a severe pain in my right side. It wouldn't go away for about two minutes. It was only severe that one time. Since then, it comes and goes, but the pain is somewhat dull. It only affects me for a second.

The symptoms of appendicitis are:

1.Loss of appetite

2.Nausea/Vomiting

3.Fever of 99 to 102

4.Dull or sharp pain anywhere in the lower or upper abdomen or back

5.Severe cramps

6.Constipation or Diarrhea with gas

So far, I've only had nausea, slight fever, dull/sharp pain, and diarrhea. My sister has been sick lately so I think that's probably why I had a fever a few days. And when I press on my right side, I don't feel any pain unless if I push really hard. And I don't feel pain when I sneeze, walk, or cough.

Paranoia runs in my family so I'm probably just being paranoid. My family wouldn't be able to afford the surgery if something were wrong. And I can't go to the doctor without my mother knowing seeing as the one I go to is located in another city and I can't drive plus they would most likely charge her for the visit.

Do you think I'm just being paranoid? Could it be something else? I do lay down a lot so could the pain be from that? My bed isn't the best. It has springs and it's very old. My family bought it in the early 90s. Please help.

person12345 agony auntAnother symptom of appendicitis, your body can't remedy it and untreated it most likely will burst and you can die within a week. If you'd gotten apendicitis you would have known by now. I know two people who had it, both knew about it very quickly. High fever, vomiting, and unbearable pain.

Those symptoms could just as easily be gas as anything else. If you're worried you need to go to a doctor, I don't believe that anyone on here is an MD and even if they were, they wouldn't dispense advice over the internet.

I'm fairly sure that if it was anything given that 4 whole months have passed it would have gotten worse, but you need to go to a doctor if you're concerned. If something feels off, that's when it's time to go in. This is how people catch more serious things early on. If you explain over the phone that you don't have insurance, they might be able to put you on the phone with a doctor who can try to help you know whether you need to go in for tests or not.

CindyCares agony aunt If you had had appendicitis by June 17th, by now it would have probably turned into peritonitis and you would be already dead ( unless somebody would have rushed you to the hospital in time ).

That does not mean that everything is Ok though, if your symptoms have been persisting since over two months, there must be something wrong, I have no idea what, since your symptoms are common to many different conditions, from very mild to, well, very not mild. So , you NEED to go and get checked. Particularly , if your fever has been slight but persistent for all this time, it sounds like there could be some low grade infection, but be sure it won't stay low grade if you keep "nursing " it!

A male reader, LazyGuy Netherlands +, writes (22 October 2011):

LazyGuy agony auntSo... your logic for not going to the doctor is that you couldn't afford the surgery if something is wrong...

If whatever is wrong needs surgery then you can't afford not to go, unless your life has no value.

Nobody here can diagnose you. Even if there was a real doctor on this forum, he/she would never agree to an online diagnosis especially with no medical history.

It could be anything. Doctors spend years in school to learn how to diagnose and then years in training to learn how to deal with people before they are allowed to treat people. Perhaps there is a reason for this?

Go visit a doctor. A consultation can't be all that expensive (don't know American prices, I life in a country that has Obama's nazi death camp socialist medicine for decades so I can go to the doctor for free, but hey vote GOP, because everyone having access to medicine is bad okay)

compared to a disease that gets worse and worse.

Even if it was appendictis (unlikely to last this long without dying), if it is caught BEFORE it goes accute, the surgery can be planned rather then rushed through the emergency room, making it cheaper.

Saving on healthcare is never a good idea... well, unless you are a republican.

Tisha-1 agony auntIf you had appendicitis starting in June you'd be so ill you wouldn't be able to post right now.

I think you should get it checked out and stop worrying about bothering anyone. The real bother would be having to deal with an acute attack of something that could have been nipped in the bud had you sought help NOW.

Moo's Mum agony auntThose symptons could also be flu, gallstones, 24 hour bug and many more. You should go to a doctor and be properly assessed so you can put your mind at rest.
