I was born with a head full of deep bright red hair which remained that color until I turned 14...then...it gradually turned to a dark brown color, often mistaken for black.
Three months ago, at age 46, my hair started reverting to its orginal deep bright red color.
So...I suppose I can answer this question from a red heads point of view, although I cannot answer it from the pov of a male...but...I think gender is actually inapplicable to your query.
It is not my hair color which determines what type of individual I am attracted to...It is the individual inner substance.

 I somehow don't think thats up to genetics? The closes I can come to answering this is that people typically look for others with similar facial features, or similar features to their parent of opposite sex. They are also drawn towards someone who smells similar to themselves (this is based on you eating the same types of food and being around the same type of smell). Similar children play the nicest, is a saying in my country.
But, this is no rule or law. It's really up to personal taste most of the time.

 Am sorry but this is a question that is to broad for anyone to answer, at the end of the day hair colour or skin colour shouldnt matter, thats like asking me would i go near a dark complection guy because i have red hair and the answer would be well i would need to know that guy and see what he was like.
So just get to know this guy that you like somemore and finally pluck up the courage to ask him out, you wont find out any other way until you ask him so go for it and good luck.
