I've always personally preferred my proper female friends because they are mature and are a good chat, I can't say that about guys much. As I came out and everyone got used to it I did become proper friends with the guys and I have now some great friends equal to my girl mates.
Also as I got more comfortable in my skin I did let myself go and liked sports more and became friends with even more guys when I helped win a few matches in rugby.
I think majority of gay teens they do attach themselves with girls, closet gays could go either way depending if they macho or girly/shy

From my experience gay teen boys have mostly girls as friends. Especially if they are open about being gay.

Depends on the individual guy but my best friend is a gay male and he has always had mostly female friends. A couple of guy friends but his close circle are all girls.

As far as I've seen, gay teenage boys have only female friends, or just a few boy friends and 90% girls...

Or maybe he feels safer with girls (young men can be very harsh on their friends with teasing about sexuality,) so then he may have more female friends. He could also have a mix.
And I do think some gay boys date girls to hide they are gay, so it may be harder to tell who is gay and who is hiding.

Not always, you could argue a guy has lots of female friends because he likes playing the field and can't think of anything else but skirt and the girls like his attention. Its not so much the friendship, more the way he interacts with them. Does he flirt with them or does he wear similar coloured clothing etc.
