A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

ive just found out im pregnant.

thing is, I could highly possibly be around 26 weeks gone. I say this as months ago I missed a couple of periods but then they came back, pretty normal so I didn't think anything of it. recently have been getting a movement in my stomach, which made me a little paranoid so I completed a pregnancy test and it came back positive,

I have only spoken to a gp and midwife via telephone, I have an appointment booked in for 5 days time.

I was told on the phone by what I told them it is very possible I am already around 26 weeks gone, and if I am I have already missed my scans ect, I would still get one but it wouldn't be as accurate.

does anyone have experience in this...what will happen if I am that far along as regards to a scan and other help and things pregnant women get?

I am rather upset I have already missed out on half of my pregnancy and It would kill me if I wasn't able to get a scan with the picture and things.

any advice and experience notes would be great

thanks

Aunty BimBim agony auntWhen I was in hospital for my daughter's birth there was a woman in the same ward didn't know she was pregnant until she went into labour, she thought it was really, really bad constipation pains ......... the baby was born on the bathroom floor at home, a BIG surprise for mum and grandma!!

Baby was very healthy, so was mum so please don't feel that you have put your baby at risk by not having scans or check ups and the rest of it.

As somebody else has mentioned your GP and/or midwife will be able to advise you of what to expect and what you need to be doing.

And you still have time to prepare for baby. If you are still working talk to your GP and ask him his advise about that, and CONGRATULATIONS!

A male reader, Hnk  United Kingdom +, writes (28 March 2014):

Hnk agony auntHello,

I understand your position and I have seen such cases where the mother of the prenatal isn't sure that she is pregnant!

To get rid of your worries, see if you have been doing any of the following which could have been harmful to the baby but this doesn't make certain that the baby would be affected. Many a times, it only results in underweight baby but you still got 12 weeks before the baby is due so this won't make a difference.

*Smoking

*Taking medications for some medical condition like epilipsy which are considered teratogens(harmful for baby). Normal drugs for fever, flu and other similar conditions have no effect on the fetus.

*Dieting (skipping meals or not eating well)

* Excessive drinking

Sexual intercourse would not harm the baby!

However, if you stop smoking, drinking etc, now; there is a very high chance that the baby would not be underweight if 38 weeks of gestation is completed.

As the baby is in around 26th week (birth usually at 38 weeks after fertilisation) which means the baby has developed all of its important organs. We usually regard a premature baby to survive at 26 weeks if given intensive care!

So now,the baby is basically gaining weight and going through little changes in its already formed organs to be fully functional at birth as a normal baby.

I would advice you to eat food rich in iron (usually iron and folic acid supplements are given after checking Iron levels ), drink milk, low fat yogurt, whole grains, beans, salmon, eggs, berries.

Avoid foods that are too rich in fats and cut alcohol to zero. Undercooked meat, sushi or unwashed fruits/vegetables are to be refrained.

Talk to your GP as he can guide you better after the scans!

I hope this will be useful!

Good luck

chigirl agony auntYou will still get a scan with pictures and things, you're only half way there as you said yourself... I don't understand what you are afraid you wont get?

Look, so you missed the early part of preparations and taking extra vitamins etc, but kids are born perfectly fine without all that extra stuff too you know. My mom didn't know she was pregnant with me until 5 months in, and I wasn't unhealthy. Children are born where the mom never knew she was pregnant until the laybour started, and those kids end up fine as well, nothing more unusual or problematic than those who had the early scans etc.

But, maybe I misunderstood, what is it you are worried about? You mention something about pictures? I don't really understand, you can still have pictures... But did you think about having an abortion and worry you are too late?

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntDon't be too concerned. My Mother missed out on early-, mid- and late pregnancy care.... and I and my four siblings seemed to pop out OK..... I don't know what kind of fears you've been told to have.... but Mother Nature did NOT intend for carrying a baby to be something that MEN doctors needed to tell you how to do. IF you eat smartly, don't drink a lot of alcohol, don't smoke oodles of cigarettes.... and don't deprive yourself of Oxygen regularly; then the little baby (ies) that you're carrying should be just fine....

Good luck.... Please post pictures, once the little critter(s) pop out!!!!

A female reader, Honeypie United States +, writes (28 March 2014):

Honeypie agony auntI didn't know I was pregnant with #2 til she started to kick and I started having braxton hicks contractions. I was roughly 4 1/2 months pregnant. I was put on bed rest and had a healthy 9lbs 7oz baby girl at 40 weeks.

They might still do a scan and if they don't then you still have your baby. I would be more concerned with taking some prenatal vitamins and exercising (if your doctor suggests that).

So_Very_Confused agony auntI had two babies.. NO scans... my kids survived and thrived and both are older than you are now.

Ultrasounds were just beginning to be used when I was pregnant with my second but only for things like checking for twins.. regular scanning was not done.

My bigger concern for your baby (and you) is are you drinking and/or smoking. Are you using drugs? How is your nutrition?

truthfully pregnancy is normal and natural and women for eons have been getting pregnant and birthing babies without prenatal vitamins and scans etc.

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 March 2014):

As nice as it is to have a scan, you'll have the real thing soon :)

Allow your GP and midwife to do what they do and, in the meantime, focus on preparing everything for the baby :) finances, space, cot, nappies, clothes, blankets, food, bottles, etc! Congratulations :)
