here is a weird question for the canadian agony uncles and aunts. my buddy shes got a 3 and half yr old son. she also has a 5 yr old daughter. they all love to sit down and watch, i know, this is a shocker! -house of 1000 corpses. amongst other movies like hostel, and saw. her children from the time they could sit on their own, loved horror. she never encouraged it. she tried walt disney movies, and stuff. they HATE and will never watch it. i know this as i have seen it firsthand. but, u put on a horror movie or a comedy as inappropriate as it is, like freddy got fingered and they will laugh, with the comedy movies or just sit with mom and watch horror. she loves horror and discovered her kids loved these movies when she was alone watching her movies her kids walked out of their room after nap time and sat down right next to her QUIETLY and watched. normally her kids cant sit if their lives depended on it! to the point, her mother in law threatened her twie, saying if childrens protective services got wind of this they would remove her kids from her care. shes a wonderful mom, and she tells her kids that the horror is just fake, she will even laugh to it so her kids dont get scared. she told her mother in law to mind her own business, saying its not like her kids were watching porn. she said its not abuse or neglect. she walks her children through the movies saying they are only fake, their not real etc. her kids dont act out violently, nor act inappropriately either. she asked me for my opinion. i said i believe its up to the parents personal discretion, although the majority of people might disagree with her kids watching horror and other inapprop. comedies.so, can childrens protective services apprehend her children from her for this practice? she lives in ontario. so perhaps someone can shed some legal advice on this topic, not a personal opinion!! thx. shes quite worried about what her mom in law said. but she has great times with her kids watching movies, they even have horror night where she gets popcorn out and they sit down and cuddle and watch. her husband does not like them watching these movies, but, the parents are VERY affectionate to their kids, and show love and nurture them, despite the one flaw of letting them watch these movies. so, anyone have any legal knowledge about this topic? thx all of ya!

I dont know about any legal advice but my godmothers daughter has been doing this since the age of 4. We took her to disneyworld florida and all she wanted to do was ride the BIG rides. Shes no mental scarring or anything. I think its ok, as long as they dont show other peoples kids.

A good friend of mine is a social worker, although not in Ontario. She sees removing a child from a home as something pretty drastic -- she does it if necessary, but by no means lightly. While I think letting small children watch that stuff is *wildly* inappropriate, if the children are otherwise loved, cared for, well nourished, and free from abuse, I doubt it would be sufficient grounds for the kids to be taken. A complaint to child services alone, though, would be enough to make the parents' lives difficult.

I have no idea about Canada but here in the US you would most definitely be subject to scrutiny for those movies for children that young as that age cannot understand the concept of 'fake' and the fact that the humor is inappropriate as in adult in nature. Our movies have ratings on them and to consistently show them to underage childeren is a problem here. Childrens Services would likely interview and perhaps suggest parenting classes.
