A female Cayman Islands age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm a bit confused by the woman's cycle. If I had my period the 25th of October and it ended 4-5 days later...what are my fertile days and what are my not-so fertile days? I looked at some things online but got horribly confused. Also, I wondered, are men truly more drawn to women while they're ovulating? During their menstruation?

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (12 November 2010):

birdynumnums agony auntYou ALWAYS ovulate 14 days before your period, no matter whether you have a 26 day cycle, a 33 day cycle, or a 41 day cycle - you always ovulate 14 days before your period. Not everyone has a 28 day cycle. Keep that in mind if you are using this to calculating when you are fertile.

Some sites say 12-16 days, with 14 being the average. :^D

A female reader, natasia United Kingdom +, writes (12 November 2010):

natasia agony auntYou count the first day of your period as Day 1.

Days 1-4/5 = your period (basically, the first week)

Some time between days 10 and 14 usually, you will ovulate.

When you ovulate, the egg only lives for a max. 48 hours, and usually less, so there is only a short period of time when you could conceive (ie, when the egg is alive). However, sperm can live for up to 5 days, so if you had sex 5 days before you ovulate (eg, day 9 if you ovulate on day 14), then there is a chance of pregnancy, as the sperm would have waited in your fallopian tube to meet the egg when it came out. The closer to ovulation that you have sex, the more chance of sperm being there to meet the egg.

Then once the egg has gone, you have 14 days until the start of your next period (this is usually a fixed 14 days in everyone - the thing that varies is which day you ovulate).

So, you are fertile really only about 24-48 hours, but because sperm can wait up to 5 days in your fallopian tube or uterus, then you actually have about 7 days where there is a chance.

Eg, if you ovulate on day 14, from day 9 to day 15 you could get pregnant.

Hope that helps!
