CindyCares agony aunt Sure, why not ?

When you think the world of someone it means you have a very good opinion and high consideration for them- not that you are in love with them and/or can't live without them.

Plus, you may think the world of somebody but still not be able / willing to be in a relationship with them due to many possible factors ( distance, age difference, religious views, career...several things )

Finally , and pardon the negativity but... don't take it too literally . Some people say things without really thinking , meaning, or understanding them , just because it's the right thing to say , or the easiest one. Don't get so hung up on words ; actions will tell you much better what people feel about you.

Am not sure how best to answer this one. The trouble is, different people can mean different things with the same statement. I have a female best friend. She has told me and other people that she thinks the world of me and we have been known to say "I love you" to each other. We email several times a day and text often. But we are only friends.
