A female United States age 41-50, *Mrs.wondering writes:

Ok, my question is I want to give my husband a polygraph test and I want to know that he cant alter the test.

The reason I want him to take one is because well lets just say his work takes him to different places over seas for a year to a year and a half. Since he has been gone on his job, we do talk on the internet and some times web cam. In that time some time there are some unexplained or just delayed responces from my husband. Also some times things sound kinda fishy to me, he will over explain things to me or just say im jumping to conclusions when I didnt even mention any thing about that, also says he will be sending me video of things for proof of some thing I didnt even ask him. I dont know if he has done any thing wrong, maybe it is just me and my fears.

But my question is if he will be willing to take one even though he has said in the past he has been "trained" to pass one for his job...... can he really alter one??? Maybe I can be my own lie detector test with some help.

The tests can be unreliable. I wouldnt trust something as important as my marriage to one of those machines. Especially if hes told you he knows how to get around them. If you are really suspicious it might be better to hire someone where hes staying to record his actions. Or it would be cheaper to install a keylogger on his pc.

dirtball agony auntPolygraphs are crap. Absolute crap. It's obvious that your trust is broken. That's what really matters here.

baddogbj agony auntHonestly if he is a 30 something guy with a normal sex drive and he is overseas and away from you for more than a couple of months a time then he's having sex with someone. It's human nature. That doesn't mean that it's something to stress about or that its a threat to your marriage he's just taking care of a physical and emotional need.

Yes it's possible to fake a polygraph. The polygraph measures your body's reactions supposedly because guilt will trigger an innate reaction in you. they first ask you neutral or irrelevant questions to gauge your body's base line response, before asking you the loaded questions. But if you bite your lip or clench your muscles or something like that every time any question is asked your body will have a reaction (in this case to the pain) to any and all questions regardless and that will confuse the polygraph results.

If you're that paranoid why not hire a private investigator to check if your husband is telling the truth? no idea how much that will cost though especially if he's overseas.

A female reader, Merilee Canada +, writes (30 December 2010):

In all honesty, there is a reason why polygraphs arnt really admissable in courts ... its because the machines are sometimes faulty. Now, lets say, he took 3 tests in a row, on different machines, you have a better outlook on the results.

The other thing is that, yes, some people can alter the answers.

Lets say, a guy lets a girl go down on him. My personal opinion is that this is sex. But for others, they believe that unless there is penetration, there is no sex. So if they are asked in the test, did you have sex with so and so, they could honestly answer no.

Ive also heard that taking aspirin can alter it, I dont know how, but meh.

As for you being your own test, not sure how that happens, I guess during a conversation, you could ask a question. Then a few weeks later ask the same question and see if the response is the same.

But really ? Why are you doing this to yourself ? If you love him, and he loves you, and there is history there, why do you think that you arnt worthy of him being faithful and committed to you ?

I would let this go, find something to take up your time that is positive and healthy.

And send him care packages ... alot !
