YES!! There are 2 types of herpes. Type I Simplex, which is the most likely (about 80% of the population has it) is transmitted from the mouth. By drinking from the same glass, eating with the same fork and you guessed it, french kissing. Up to a couple of years ago it was though Type I lived above the waist line (hands, mouth, back); and Type II bellow the waist line (mainly genital area). Recently however, there has been some debate over the possibility that they can both live anywhere in the body. So if you have oral in a person with Type II, he could actually pass it to your mouth (although this type prefers to live -most easily contagious- in the genital area).
To know if you have been infected you can do a blood test. If you have Type I then you'd most likely just get the famous cold sores (yes, thats Herpes Type I) and should be careful in sharing glasses and the sort with babies, friends and family. Some people don't ever get a symptom but it is rather uncomfortable when it is cold, you eat too much salt or have too much stress as these tend to make you have an outbreak.
Type II (genital) on the other hand, as far as I know, is mostly transmitted sexually. Now, using a condom will likely not protect because this can be transmitted by skin to skin contact. This kind of herpes is much more uncomfortable although treatment is available. Some say that if you get type I it is very unlikely you get type II.
Make a search about it, it is important you are aware of this information. Don't go running away from this guy, he did the right thing by letting you know before anything else happened. Hope it helps!

It all depends what kind of herpes he has. You can get lip or oral herpes from kissing, which means cold sores.
If he has genital herpes then you can only get that from contact with his genitals!
Hope this helps, you might want to ask him to clarify!
