Prisoners of war don't get much exercise in bamboo cages but they all loose weight. You eat a loaf of toast and drink a gallon of coke and walk once around the block. Your take... you must be sleeping the weight on. Maybe you are eating too much in your dreams.

I'm no expert but I would guess that you can't get fat from oversleeping or not sleeping enough. However if you sleep too much which means you don't get enough time to do lots of exercise or if you don't get enough sleep so you have no energy to do exercise then that could be a factor in putting on weight.

The reason you should get a proper amount of sleep though is that if you want "good results" the next day then you should have slept properly so that you can exercise to your maximum.
Tiredness can also affect your blood sugars. If you are tired you tend to crave sugar and carbohydrates, which in turn releases insulin and will decrease any exercise performance by causing you to be more drowsy.
If you are eating sensibly and exercising you might as well sleep properly too.

It's important for your body when you're dieting that you get enough sleep - apparently being sleep deprived can increase your appetite (especially for carbs) because you're tired and crave a rapid energy fix. But the only thing that will make you fatter or thinner is the number of calories you consume - as long as you manage to burn off more than you take in every day, you'll lose weight. But losing weight slowly is much more likely to be permanent weight loss, and avoiding sugar highs is really helpful too because it keeps your metabolism going at a more even rate.
