Hi,

I'm going on a trip, and would like to know if my husband can get into my computer to find sites I've been on. I have a password and erased my history, but can he bypass it all to find out everything?

I once saw a show about computer forensics, but it went over my head.

ArmyMedic agony auntSpeaking of GOD, do you remember the marriage vows you made to your husband, that promise you made in front of your family, friends and God.

I'm not particularly religious, but some things may be between you and God but do you really have that little respect for your husband?

(Un)fortunately, with a little perception and a little patience in searching the net, ANYONE can do ANYTHING.

By the way, to those who say clearing the cache will clear the history - that is actually a yes and no. Yes, it will clear the history from the browser, but no as anyone who know what to look for, can still find history in the folders. ^_^

Plus even if you delete a file 'permanently', there are still tools that can recover a corrupt/formatted/deleted hard drive.

Also, it's possible to bypass the start-up password by having a boot-up disk as Tomas had mentioned OR tinkering with some jumpers on your motherboard - that is if your husband know what to look for OR simply removing the hard drive and booting it up on a different computer.

Google would be his best friend. Technical forums would be his other best friend. 8D

Thanks for the answers. It's a windows XP. I don't undestand why they don't make it easy to totally blank out a persons history. I've went on sites I'm not proud of, but some things should be between me and God.

ArmyMedic agony auntWhat are you hiding from him, surely you can't feel this guilty and worry about an invasion of privacy without feeling guilty for something.

Maybe you should address the trust issues and whatever you are hiding, more than the fact he's could if technically minded enough see everything you have done on your computer.

As said already, it really depends on how much of a computer whizz he is. It might be a good idea to visit sites that would not cause problems so he finds something in your history.

Lesson learnt here mate, go to internet cafes to view things you don't want hubby finding. Enjoy your trip x

A male reader, Tomas United States +, writes (6 March 2009):

It completely depends on how techie and how interested your husband is.

As a rule, if someone has physical access to your computer, they can get into it. Without a password, that generally involves mounting the disk, such as via a Linux boot disk. Setting a boot password and having disk encryption make things pretty darn secure, but short of that you are vulnerable.

Erasing your browser history and clearing your cache helps, but persistent site cookies may be left behind (the kind that make you not have to log into this site each time you come). I believe your Google search history is separate from your browser's (managed via your Google settings?). There are probably other clues (like Star's blank history ... nice catch!).

Bottom line, like most other activities in life, your actions on a computer are almost impossible to completely hide. Especially from people you trust with access to your stuff and knowledge of your likely passwords. Like spouses.

he probably wont fit in the computer.

if you clear the cache and the history - unlikely unless he knows what he is doing...

to clear cache and history in IE...(menutools Browsing Histoy Delete button...

of course it being blank is probably a bad clue if he was looking hard.

i suspect you would want to know for the big surprise trip you were arranging for him....
