the herpes virus lies dormant in the body whether you have an outbreak or not! you MUST use condoms!

but oral herpes only effects a person's mouth and my vagina
is different right?so does that mean that i can't have unprotected sex without passing it either?
No, you can... Actually, you're very unlikely that you'd pass oral herpes through unprotected sex. Also, a lot of people have antibodies to fight off the HSV-1 virus, but there is always a remote possibility.
The virus can be transmit through your saliva and even your breath if it comes into contact with an infection site.
Just be careful and always use protection unless you're in a very secure relationship.

You can still pass on herpes, even if you're not having an outbreak.
The herpes virus, like many viruses, will only exhibit "outbreak signs" under times of stress, improper diet, and improper use of the drugs you use to treat the symptoms. Otherwise, the herpes virus lies dormant.
But make no mistake, even without the signs, it's still there.
You can give oral sex and receive oral sex, but it's important that your partners know that you have an STD in advance. In most states, it's illegal to have sex (of any kind) without informing the other person in advance that you have an STD.
