A reader, anonymous, writes (10 April 2009):

Ok for those of you who got pregnant when you were on the pill - you have what is called a withdrawal bleed starting shortly after you 7 day break (this is not a period, but simulates a period) If you are on the Pill when you are pregnant you will continue to have this withdrawal bleed! You do need to be careful certain antibiotics can make the pill ineffective and you will continue to have withdrawal bleeds. I suggest speaking to the doctor if you have any concerns

As regards when you ovulate - you would be safer to assume that you ovulate between 12 and 16 days before your period starts (for those of you with a long cycle - you are probably ovulating late).

I have heard that you can get pregnany at any time during your cycle. I don't know how true this is but to be honest, there is free birth control out there and besides you really should be worrying about STD's such as HIV, hepatitis, Syphilis, Clamidya, Gonohreah etc. There is no excuse for not using condoms (or if in a steady relationship both getting yourself checked out at the GUM clinic and going on the pill).

Have fun, but be careful!!!

Yes a woman can get pregnant the 1st day of their period because it happened to me. A lot of people think it's a certain time of the month when you can only get pregnant but believe it or not you can get pregnant at any time. Not all women are the same and everybody don't ovulate ant the same time. It's possible cause I seen it happen with other people too.

i think no because the egg is not yet mature so it will take long to grow thus sperm would not live up to that day

It is supposedly a safe time, but really there isn't a safe time.

I was on the pill and i fell pregnant and to confuse the issue i still had periods!"

I completely agree with her and if anybody tells you it

cannot or unlikely, you better don't believe them.

There is always the risk there however unlikely .

Each time you have sex , you run the risk of getting pregnant.

There is no safe time.

A female reader, Laura1318 Malaysia +, writes (16 April 2008):

Laura1318 agony auntYou ovulate 14 days from your 1st day of period.

On the 12th and 16th day is your most fertile period.

The egg can only survive for 48 hours.

Whether you will be pregnant or not depends on those sperms finding the egg.

You have got a higher risk of pregnancy if you have sex during this period.

There are experts who say you can get pregnant while having sex during your period.

You can either believe or disbelieve this statement.

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (1 March 2008):

DoubleM agony auntA note of correction here. Using the so-called "rhythm method" without any form of birth control, if both partners are fertile, the most unlikely time for pregnancy is a few days before, during, or a few days following a menstrual cycle. Pregnancy is MOST like to occur within a few days of a woman's "ovulation," which is when her ovary or ovaries release a mature human egg for fertilization by sperm.

Most women have about a 25 to 34 day menstrual cycle, although it may vary from about 20 to 40 days for some women. That is the period lasting between the times she has a period. Ovulation typically occurs within a few days of the mid-point between the periods. Her cervical mucus usually increases and thickens, and there is a slight body temperature rise just before or at the point of ovulation. I'm sure there are Web sites that explain more.

But to answer your question, sex just before or following a woman's period is relatively unlikely to fertilize an egg because there isn't one in the fallopian tubes, but to some degree, anything can happen. An egg can usually survive up to about three days, while sperm rarely survives in the womb past five days. The safest bet is the birth control pill.

A female reader, Laura1318 Malaysia +, writes (1 March 2008):

Laura1318 agony auntYour sperm can live inside of her for 5 to 7 days .

So , 7 days before her first day of period and 7 days after is an unsafe period to have unprotected sex.

It does not mean that you will 100% be pregnant during this period. It depends on the accuracy of those sperms .

If they are built like those Patriot missiles, then you will have a home run. LOL!

Anyway, it is so messy at that time of the month, why dont you wait and used protection and use the pill, bomb proof situations are the best. No unwanted babies please.

take care
