In the U.S. it is a requirement at some clinics for patient protection. It protects the patient and the physician from false accusations, or from temptation either way. It's a good thing. Don't worry, they've probably seen a million women in the stirrups so don't be embarrassed.

In the Uk yes. They dont even have to have a nurse present though. The reason they are advised to, is so the woman can't accuse them of anything. Thats what the doc told me anyway.

Yes, a male doctor is allowed to carry out this procedure. Just as the other replies have stated, the doctor usually does have a female in the room. You are perfectally within your rights to request a female doctor to do this test if you feel at all uncomfortable, or if you simply would prefer a woman. Your doctor would not be offended and has most likely encountered this request on many previous occassions.

In most countries, a female assistant has to be present if the doctor is male. It protects the doctor and the patient.
