I have a unique problem. My bf wont support me on bed bug problem and its causing great strain. I mistakenly bought a used mattress a little while back and i started getting bitten all over. I sanitized everything in my place but then I think one hitched a ride and got into his place because even if i stay there a week or more i get bitten. He has never been bitten so even though he sees the bite on me he says they are not at his place...and his place is very clean...and he is almost

insulted that i would suggest his place could have bugs...and that i and being overly paranoid..(and i have had anxiety issues in past). but i obviously have bites...after much tears and arguing he let me sanitize hisroom and put mattress encasements on his bed but i know if I bring it up again it will cause a huge fight. If I had his support I could bring exterminator to his place but I cant...and now Im afraid theres nothing more I can do...except secretly sanitize his things....please help! Other than this we are a good and happy couple

A female reader, Candid Cally United States +, writes (1 December 2011):

Are you certain you aren't being bitten by another type of bug?

Fleas and Mosquitos can cause nasty bites for some people due to an allergic reaction. When my niece is bitten by a flea, the area becomes hugely red, inflamed, and looks like a bedbug or a spider bite.

Additionally, both Mosquitos and fleas seem to prefer biting certain people and not others because of diet, health, blood type, etc.

If only you are receiving bites, it is probably something other than bedbugs.

Have had a dermatologist or doctor examine the bites?

Have you seen any bedbugs?

So_Very_Confused agony auntBEDBUGS are a rampant problem in the USA... even some of the finest hotels are struggling with them....

I would tell him... I'm sure your place is clean hon but I'm a bit neurotic so it would give me peace of mind if you would indulge me and let me bring the exterminator to your place.."

xTheAlmightyDuckx agony auntMay i make a small suggestion? Bed bugs are rather big in size so they are not hard to reckonize, they normanally are the same size as an apple seed so you would defintley see them if they were on a bed or sheet or matress.

Do you reckon it could be fleas? do you own any pets? or maybe the matress you bought was owned by someone who had dogs or cats.

I suggest first you buy some flea spray, buy one which is designed to air out your room and then buy another which you can spray onto the carpet, it is very effective and cheap to buy.

If that doesn't work then go to the doctors, show the doctors the bites you have on your legs or arms, he should be able to tell you if they are insect bites or if they are maybe a rash. Have you change washing powder recently? or started using a different purfume?

Once you have done all that, look at your boyfriends sheets or matress, see if there are a tiny blood blotches, (thats a common sign of bed bugs.

If there is then put some sticky paper or double sided cellotape underneath the matress or cover, see in a couple of days if there are any bugs stuck to the sticky material and show it to your boyfriend.

Then he will beleive you and you can hire an exterminator. Also one more thing, if he really really has a massive problem you mentioning it then tell him until you get to the root of the problem then you can't stay at his anymore, and btw you could tell him that bed bugs always choose to stay in clean placces and just explain that your not acussing him of being dirty.
