Hello

I was talking to my girlfriend about "stuff" yesterday and turns out that herself and most of her friends are all a little worried about how their pubes look, like how they shave them or how they don't shave them.

Can any other women confirm this worry? especially in your teenage years?

Thanks

American women and Indian women shave, European women and others use a scissors and trim. UK girls seem to prefer to trim, but this may be changing. Hair is natural, it shows your a woman and not a girl. Once you start shaving, you have to continue and it's difficult because you have problems with ingrowing hairs, rashes, and sensitive skin. The hair is there to protect the pubic bone when you are having sex. UK guys aren't surprised to see women with vaginal hair.

ive talked to alot of girls about this stuff, and all except two (who werent born in america) said that they shaved the whole thing or waxed the whole thing, when i asked why the most common answers were that they felt uncomfterable with them, thought they were "gross" and other various things along those lines. so even though im not a girl, yeah i can confirm that for the most part, atleast here in new york

Having spent a lot of time travelling in Europe, the former Soviet block, and sampling the local pleasures along the way, I find a lot of European women don't shave their pubes and underarms, and even legs in some cases. Americans are so damned squeemish and seem to have all sorts of sexual hangups. In many other countries, most view sex as a natural thing, make no apologies for liking it, and leave their bodies natural, including women with big thick, natural bushes. To be honest, I enjoy sex with them much more than American women because of attitudes. Two of my favorite countries are France and Brazil. Women in these two countries are sure fire pleasers and don't spend their time worrying about whether a bush is going to turn a man off..

Yes, because there is the image of the perfect woman (and in most teenage boys I would hazard a guess that it involves looking like a porn star).

I think if a guy wants a girl to shave then he should repay the favour?! It's all childish really, does it matter if it has hair or not in the end? Is it worth hurting the feelings of the girl you love because you dont like her hair! (ok I'm not saying the poster does, its a general statement).

Chatterbox agony auntOk if you are more worride about what your pubes look like in front of this guy maybe you shouldnt be with him. haven a sexual relationship is about trusting and been 100% comfortable with them. Pubs are totally natural tell them not to stress.

Stayc63088 agony auntI'm not a teenager anymore but still to this day, yepp. At first they are worried about it but once they get comfortable with whoever they are with then they kind of don't worry as much and may let it go. Some girls will always shave/wax because they like it better that way, it has nothing to do with boyfriends. I have been single for a little while now and still do it anyway because I don't like hair. Some girls do though, depends on the girl.

A reader, anonymous, writes (11 May 2008):

I used to worry about it (before I had sex).

My first time, I was shaved, and I've determined that with a new sexual partner, I feel more comfortable being shaved. My man of about three months has told me that he prefers me unshaved (eliminates the stubble-factor). I shave only the upper part of my mons pubis, but leave my labia majorum unshaven, as well as the lower part of my mons pubis. I shave the mons because I think it looks prettier (and doesn't rub so much against tight jeans and underwear.

I also find that not shaving my labia and around my perineum eliminates ingrown hairs or irritation due to g-strings.

A reader, anonymous, writes (10 May 2008):

Yeah I think a lot of teenage girls do, and older girls too. I mean, it's just started growing there so it's basically a new thing (for early teens) and as so much porn out there shows shaved pubic hair, this confuses us as to whether this is really prefered! "Is shaved a fantasy, or are all good clean girls shaving down there?" crosses a lot of people's minds, I can imagine.

A reader, anonymous, writes (10 May 2008):

My first time was when I was 16, and at the time, I was not aware of how guys felt about the appearance of my yoni. I was horrified by my boyfriends request to shave. That night, I went home and basiclly weed whacked myself, and I am now 26 and havnt gone a day without doing so. It is crucial for a female who is sexually active to feel like she is attractive to the opposite sex (or same, depending on her preference). Girls are also aware that hair in the mouth is not a comfertable feeling. Some females, however, feel that the hair she has down there is a natural thing, and they dont want to shave it because thats the way God, Jah, the poweres that be or whatever you have faith in intended it to be. And if your girlfriend feels that way, it is a good thing to not make her feel self concious about it. I live in Hawaii and go to nude beaches twice a week, and notice that I am getting more attention than the girl who dosnt shave (and its for that reason I wear bikini bottoms now). But that tells me that the majority of men would rather it be trimmed. Maybe the girls you know are aware of that too:)

Angels1have1wings agony auntHi i'm 19 and i can try to help you out here.

Personally, i've always been a bit worried about my pubic hair. As a result i have shaved, waxed and used removal cream to rid myself of it. I don't think you should worry about this too much, Some girls feel comfortable to have a full load of pubic hair and some don't. Consider that she's mainly worried because of what you think. I mainly do it because i'm worried of what a partner would think when they saw my area down there. The best thing you can do is maybe reassure her that you're not bothered by pubic hair if she seems concerned about what people think, i mean after all i'm guesing you will mostly being the only one seeing it.

A female reader, MissKin United Kingdom +, writes (10 May 2008):

MissKin agony auntYeah I worried about it a lot. My friends worry about pubic hair and 'what to do with it' a lot. It's a bit crazy cos as far as i know guys don't really care much about it but hair on women is considered mostly taboo and we're brought up thinking it's not good to be hairy anywhere other than the hair on our heads. I'm pretty sure it's a general girl thing. I think it's culture-bound tho.
