You can't know what actions today will create the tears of the future. Just do your best, live an moral, compassionate, educated and intelligent life. That's all you can do. Tomorrow there may be a hurricane, a nuclear bomb, or an accident. Just do your best, that's all that anyone can strive to do in this uncertain human existence that we find ourselves in.... Tomorrow you may die, so just make the best of today, and let the future take care of itself....

reader, anonymous, writes (30 October 2008): Babes, I am an atheist and I do not believe in God. I have been interested in Buddhisms for many years, and I think they have an answer to "predestination" that suits my temperament and my understanding of the world.
All humans are animals, we are born mammals and are part of the human race. Because of our genes, passed down from mother and father, grandfather and grandmother, from the beginning of time, there are many biological things that are difficult to control. You have blue eyes from your parents, my eyes are brown.. That is our biology and is predestined..
But now we come to the exciting bit. Everyone has free will, we can always make choices in any situation we find ourselves in. You go to jail, do you make noise or do you obey. You are poor, do you stay poor or learn to make money. Karma (Buddhist teaching) suggests that with biology and free will you can make the best of your world. Your mother was a prostitute, therefore you don't know any different, you life plan is to be a prostitute too. But because you have free will, because you can learn and educate yourself and try and change the world, you can say, "no I won't be a prostitute, I want to do different, I can fight, and make choices to make my life different."
Choosing to live a different life, choosing to overcome the mistakes of your childhood and the circumstances you have been born into are hard. But not every abused child, will abused. People with physical difficulties can be famous Scientist's too (Steven Hawking) Yes life is predestined, you will die one day, the time and place is known, but you can't see it. But what you do in the mean time is up to you. Sometimes you may have to fight harder, you may not have riches, you may not be a princess, but if you fight hard and believe you are free, you too can change the world.
Your Jewish, and your are in Nazi Germany during world war two. Yes, you will probably die, but you can survive, because many Jewish people did. Luck, chance, determination, all these things will help. For me every person has the possibility off success, but how the game plays out, is uncertain, unreliable, but is always a lot of fun. Fight to live an authentic life, rise above your biology and the circumstances of your life. Make the mistakes you are predestined to make due to your Karma (circumstances + biology) and live a full and interesting life, for me, that is what humanity is all about. We are predestined to die and that is all....
But if you can't fight, if you can't overcome your destiny, that is normal and acceptable too. Not every poor child can rise from the gutter and be the president of the United States.. Fighting against circumstances is very hard, and many fail. You have the choice, you have free will, but if you can't change your world, then that's normal, because change and resistance is a hard thing to do...

Christian religious philosophers have spend the last 2000 years trying to resolve the contradiction implied by:
- God, who is omnipotent, knows everything, including the future
- We have freedom of choice
After 2000 years they don't appear to have succeeded convincingly.
My favourite comment on this problem (well, a closely related but similar problem, namely the problem of evil existing in a world with an all-powerful benevolent God) came in 300BC! So much for progress... Epicurus, the Ancient Greek philosopher, stated it as follows:
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

My great-grandmother always told me that the day you are born it is written the day you will die. We are all given choices along the way. It is what you do with those choices that determines which way your life will go.

Trust in God and His Son Jesus and you will get peace in your life. We all have free will to believe in Him or not to believe in Him. He only waits to be called on. The Bible says He knows the days we have. That does not mean we can't shorten the stay with our choices.

God rolls the dice. Sometimes your on a ladder and sometimes your on a snake, just keep playing the game.

I think God has a specific plan for us but he allows us the free will to chose our path. Each choice comes with a different set of circumstances and outcomes. He can take a bad thing and make it good if we ask him to. It all comes down to asking for His guidance, and allowing him to flow through you. He allows us to make our choices, hoping we will choose the ones he has set aside for us. There will be some tests and challenges along the way. It is his way of strengthening your character and making you strong. He only wants good things for our lives, but our choices sometimes lead us into bad areas. It sounds like you are searching for the greater meaning in your life and what God's plans are for you specifically. Pray about it, talk to your pastor and above all, just listen for his small, still voice. xoxox

Deep question. My friend "birdynumnums' offers great insight. My input is that nothing is "predestined" - but sometimes, it seems that way, good or bad. I've been incredibly lucky at times, then raked-over by situations or others at times. The very best advice that I can offer is to do it your way and hope that it works.

Life is not predestined. Every moment we make choices which effect our futures. What happens to you is in your hands.
But at the same time, actions have consequences. If you do bad things, they have a way of coming back to haunt you. What we do, and especially how we treat others, matters a great deal. We are not slaves to our pasts, but we do have to accept responsibility for who we have been and what we have done. Accepting responsibility means being honest with yourself, and with others, and then resolving to do better.
You can make the choice at any time to live a better life. And if you try and fail, well you can try again. There is never a bad time to try to improve yourself and have a positive outlook. It's always worth it.

I have learned more from my failures than from my successes. - Coco Chanel
There isn't anything in life that is certain than death and taxes, so you can pretty much count of life as being in a constant state of change. Even when life deals you a bad break, it seems to be more of a test of character than a punishment or a judgement. You just have to learn how to stand tall and deal with the blows. Learn to be grateful for what you have, not worry about what you don't have. AND it's always easier said than done. This past year, I lost my Dad, my Big Brother and my ability to ambulate (walk). But TA DA, at the beginning of the New Year, I shall become the Bionic Woman, and walk again. Life goes on. You become what you make of it...
