Are hospital A&E departments not supposed to give out the morning after pill?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

so i was with a guy for nearly 3 years, and we always practiced safe sex, but one night we had no condoms and we just could not help ourselves, so we had unprotected sex. i went to the hospital A+E the next morning and got the morning after pill. now, i'm just curious as to whether hospital A+E's are supposed to give the morning after pill, because the nurse i saw said to consider some sort of contraceptive, so i decided to go to my GP about the implant, and as doctors do, he asked what brought me to him in the first place, so i said i got caught short and had to get the morning after pill from A+E, and he said i shouldn't have done that :S why? are hospital A+E's not supposed to give them or what?

just so you all know, i have been praticing safe sex ever since because i've had the implant ever since :)

Yes, you have the message: wrong kind of accident. I expect the A&E stocks them for rape victims. I guess they weren't too busy or you would have got a much blunter response!

oh, i see... ok then

thankyou for your answers.

it's just the way he said it made me think that the A+E's shouldn't be giving them full stop, which i found strange as they obviously have a supply of them and gave me one

Blonde68 agony auntI think your GP was referring to the fact it wasn't really an emergency, in that it wasn't a matter of life or death since you have up to 72 hours to take the morning after pill. Having worked for the NHS I know that some, but not all A&Es actually offer this service.

Ideally you should have visited one of the following who offer the pill free of charge and condoms;

•your GP

•any family planning clinic

•some pharmacies

•any genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic or sexual health clinic

•any NHS walk-in centre

•any young persons' clinic

Finally, continue to practice safe sex so you aren't ever in this position again!
