A female United Kingdom age 26-29, *azed and confused2015 writes:

I'm a pretty nerdy person. I have never had a boyfriend and I would like to change that. Most guys I like are out going and "crazy" but I'm pretty shy unless around friends. When I'm around my friends, I'm crazy, random, and fun. But with strangers I sort of close up a little. I can still be fun but much less. Around guys I can be just a bit funny but mostly I laugh and add in when needed cause I usually hang with funny guys. Let me get to the point, I'm not very pretty at least in my opinion. I want to make myself stand out a little. I have dark skin ( not very dark but not light either) brown eyes, 5'7, not fat but not skinny either. I have curly long hair, and I wear glasses. I don't want to change my personality. Does anyone have any makeup tips like what kind and how much to wear. Also some style tips on how to make a guy do a double take. But sorta attract the right type of guy. Like maybe if I wanted to attract a jock, nerd, or average joe. Please and thanks

RedAthena agony auntI am giving you the same advice I give my daughter. You should be comfortable in your own skin!

Since you are in the 13-15 age range, I would reccommend you go with a very natural look, with make-up that just enhances, not covers up your beauty:)You also want to pick cosmetics that do not harm your skin.

Check out Bare Escentuals. I doubled checked, and you can find it online or in the UK. It is a natural mineral makeup, the boutiques have wonderful consultants to help you get started, etc.

Also, if you admire any of the looks of girls around you, strike up a conversation with a compliment! My daughter often gets great shopping tips just by giving a nice compliment in regards of clothing, shoes, hair...

And she usually makes a new friend as well:)

Good Luck!

So_Very_Confused agony auntYou need to be true to yourself and then the RIGHT boys will be attracted to you... the ones that FIT YOU...

You can either go to a department store and get tips and hints from the ladies that work at the make up counters usually for free or go to a salon and pay someone to show you how to put the make up on to best enhance your features.

NOT too heavy... you want to look natural.

fi_the_tree agony auntLook at celebrities that you admire. Not expecting you to be able to afford the things that they have, but take some inspiration from them, their hair styles and make up ideas. There's lots of stuff on the web about creating your own style, the important thing is to be unique. Don't just copy a celeb, put your own twist on it aswell.

Get the girls round one night and do each others hair and make-up, youtube have soooooo many video tutorials on hair and make up ideas! Girly night in with films, popcorn and pampering!

All the best :)

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (4 October 2011):

CindyCares agony aunt Now this may be commonplace, may sound a banality, nevertheless... it's true : beauty is an attitude. Feel pretty, think pretty, act pretty and you will LOOK pretty. Yes, but... how do you feel pretty ,if you don't ? Let's skip all the ( important ! ) part about confidence and self esteem ( there are plenty of good books , even classes, about that ) and let's stick to esthetics : you accentuate the positive and minimize the negative, in other words, wotk with what you have.

For instance, hair. Hair is so important, they can really draw your feature out or kill them. You say you've got curly long hair, that's excellent- attractive by definition. Only ,you need to take good care of it, always keep it clean and shiny, and choose a good hairstyle that suits you. Like, you may need a layered cut, if your hair are voluminous and all the same length they 'll have a funny "pagoda" or "triangle " look. Curly and long is good, but curly and shabby, or curly and frizzy , not so much. Splurge ONCE on a good hairstylist , which will help you chose a good hairstyle for you, then with a bit of patience and hot iron :) you can learn reproducing it at home.

Also, wearing glasses is not anymore the stygma it used to be, in fact some frames are actually pretty cool, ... but "naked " eyes are still sexier, catchier and more feminine. Wear contacts. No eyeshadow or eyeliner at your age ! but plenty of mascara , and a thin line of kajal or black pencil in the rim of your lower eyelids.

" Not fat but not thin " come on, let's be honest. When people say that, 98 % of times it means they are overweight but they don't like to say it loud. No drastic diets : eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, ditch the MacDonald, and exercise. Maybe a dance class ? There's nothing like learning ( a bit ! you don't need to become Ginger Rogers ) to dance, to feel like you OWN your body rather than just grudgingly inhabiting it, and that shows in your posture , walk, and general attitude.

And smile ! It does not matter if your teeth aren't Hollywood quality, just smile , a warm ( and sincere of course ! ) smile wins people over.

As for clothing, it would be a very long post and probably an useless one,not knowing you, your personality, body , and daily routine, but whatever you wear ,please don't try too hard. Give up the "double take " effect, that's very easy to reach if you show a lot of flesh, but it generally is... double tacky :), and at your age, most of all you'd look as if you dressed up for Halloween.

Finally... don't worry, have a look around, and you'll see that everybody, literally everybody with the possible exception of very few lucky creatures on the pages of fashion magazines ( but they too are airbrushed ) have imperfections and defects. One can try to look the best she can ( and why not, it's FUN ! it's a great passtime too ! ) but , ultimately... you just have to look like YOU, not like with some unattainable, artificial, sterile standard of beauty.
