Tickets to ANY game. If he's just into sports, he'll be into seeing any live game with you. If you get him tickets to a live outdoor game, also get him a scarf (maybe for the team you think he'll favor). Say it's because you wanted to make sure he stays warm (it's those girly touches that seal the deal. Makes them feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside).
Get him a pair of sneakers! Any athlete who likes to get out there and play, loves a good pair of shoes to play IN. My boyfriend loves it when I get him new Pumas or Adidas's. He loves wearing them because they're good for during the day to school/work whatever, and then a pickup game of basketball with his friends afterwords.
Get him some really delicious cologne. It's not sports related, but it's still a great gift. Go pick out the one you think smells sexiest because you're going to be the one smelling it up close!
Okay that's my brainstorm for the day. Good luck!

What sports does he play? Is he active in sports or is he a spectator?
If he's a swimmer, you could get him a new pair of goggles or a new bathing suit (Omega Sports sells them year-round).
Or if he's into martial arts... that's an expensive sport, but you could inquire at his school about what kind of gear is in demand?
How about a new soccer ball? Does he play soccer?

I often have trouble thinking the 'one perfect present', so I like to make personalised hampers. Just get a basket and full it with some of his favourite treats, and a couple of little keepsakes. Maybe a photo book full of pictures of the two of you and your friends, a mix CD, maybe bake something? You can't go wrong with something you've put thought into, he's bound to appreciate it!
