Am I really depressed about the break up?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hello everyone. My girlfriend broke up with me a few days ago and ever since, I've been feeling really low. I was speaking to a friend of mine yesterday and she said that I could be depressed because of the break up. I know that the way I'm feeling is because she left me but I'm not sure if depression is really the correct term to describe it as we were only together for two weeks and I've never been this upset over a break up. I really like her and actually felt, for the first time in my life, that I want to spend the rest of my life with her. Ever since she ended the relationship all I've done is sit in my room on facebook listening to music. I've been listening to love songs and her favourite songs. I've become a little snappy with my friends and family even though I don't mean to and haven't been eating or sleeping properly. Could my friend be right about depression and if so then why am I depressed about it?

TasteofIndia agony auntYes, I think you are mistaking clinical depression with just being really sad. Some people use "depressed" to mean those things interchangeably... your friend probably just meant the latter. A break up is a reasonable thing to get super bummed out and snippy over. You sound like pretty much everyone after a break up. Time will heal you, you do not need anti-depressants. You need extra distractions in your life and new songs on your computer.

Sorry about the break up, pretty much all of us have been there and know it sucks!! I can only assure you that it gets better. Good luck, sweet thing!

AuntyAlexxmo agony auntDepression is a mental health disorder caused by, among other things, a chemical inbalance in the brain so no i doubt that you have depression. Sounds like you are acting the same as 99% of people when they get dumped and it is only normal to feel a bit down and sad and even to mope around for a bit, everyone does it =) as unplesant as it is it will pass and your so young and there a millions of lovely young girls out there so i would worry too much!
