I have been with my girlfriend for almost 8 months and she spends the night at my house and she left today to go home and I have been breaking down because I miss her so much.

A male reader, RevMick United Kingdom +, writes (6 May 2014):

RevMick agony auntHi,

You are young and hormones will be flying all over the place. It sounds just like you miss her, I would say if you are breaking down and it's not been too long, or it's over an extended period it could mean you are becoming dependent on that person for your happiness.

The problem with that is, if you get dependent on someone making you happy, when that person isn't there you get depressed. Remember, if you aren't happy without someone and with your own company, no-one else can make you happy.

That kind of attachment is dangerous and can lead to depression or worse. Missing someone is fine but missing someone in the way you describe is slightly worrying.

However, this could be your first relationship (you didn't say) so it could be that you are just suffering from first girlfriend syndrome.
