writes: Is this bipolar disorder or what? My mood swings have been all over the place since i was young... but i'm not sure if that is hormones or an actual disorder. For example, i'll be really happy and hyper and then next minute boom! I'm depressed for no reason, like i'll have absolutely nothing to be depressed about but suddenly i'll just feel like that and i'll distant myself from my friends and this depression may last for a few days or so. Then out of nowhere i'm happy and back to my normal self!? Also, sometimes when someone says something i'll lash out and start a shouting argument then after i'll be calm and apologetic and not understand why i got so annoyed. Another example is, some days people will irritate the hell out of me, even when they aren't doing anything but acting like themselves, it'll just be something that is getting on my nerves.I know it's quite vague, and i've asked my family about it and they say i just have very rapid mood swings but it's not bipolar disorder... yet i've read the symptoms and they are all matching?!?!? what do you think......

This is not bi-polar. I experienced what you're describing all through my teens and still sometimes now 2 weeks out of the month. And it is just hormones. Some of us are just more susceptible to mood swings than others!I'm a CBR hypnotherapist so I can to some extent control my emotions, believe it or not just the knowledge that these feelings are natural, are caused by hormones and will pass eventually helps. I suggest making a diary of dates and times when you experience the moodiness and it may form a pattern. I have also cut out all bread, pasta, rice and potatoes from my diet 6 days a week and upped my protein, it works incredibly well. And I walk 20 mins just for pleasure with some good music, that increases health and endorphins released in your body.My grandma has bi-polar which is why I know its not that. Highs and lowd occur over periods of months, not days. Trust me, if you had bi-polar, you would be acting "crazy" and your family would be admitting you to hospital. Last time my grandma had a high/low, it lasted 6 months. She parked her car in the middle of a busy road, walked away, got herself arrested than spent the rest of it in a mental home to stop her doing something stupid. She now had to be on lithium for the rest of her life. Stop looking up stuff which fits with your symptoms. Eat better, exercise and recognise that you're normal. Participate in activities that you enjoy, make the most of your life!

Only a psychologist will be able to tell. Why don't you pay one a visit? S/he could help.

This is also typical if someone is in a relationship with someone who`s bad for them but they wont let go of. I think manic depression is the most likely.

I think everybody can say they've experienced crazy mood swings for what seem like no reason. If no one in your family has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and you have not had an abusive or traumatic childhood, it's unlikely that what you've described is bipolar disorder. Any number of things can cause mood swings, from low blood sugar, hormonal changes throughout the day, hunger, fatigue, thyroid disease, a vitamin or protein deficiency, allergy, ennui and so forth. From your description I can't tell the severity of your mood swings, but if they are coming from a bipolar disorder they would be pretty extreme. I have known individuals suffering from bipolar disorder and their manic episodes are not just 'giddiness and happiness'. During one of his manic episodes, one guy I knew headed straight for the docks and stole a sailboat to go ocean fishing (apparently with his bare hands...) and got in a lot of trouble. Another guy during an episode decided at around 2 AM to hitchhike three states away to go to some record store he remembered from his childhood. During their depressed episodes they became withdrawn, drank and became verbally abusive to those around them. One guy has basically messed up his child and can no longer find work; his wife and kid often stay with my parents when he becomes depressed. What I'm trying to point out is that these guys' mood swings (episodes) prevent them from leading normal lives and cause them to hurt the people around them. Bipolar disorder is not a matter of feeling happy at one moment and sad or bitchy the next; it's a sickness that controls you.I'm not saying you don't have bipolar disorder; if you truly believe you do you should have a professional evaluate you. However, it all depends on how extreme these mood swings are and how they effect your life. If you're chipper at lunch time and a total bitch by the afternoon, it COULD be bipolar disorder... but then again it sounds pretty normal for a teenage girl.

There are lots of reasons why you could have mood swings - hormones are usually the main cause, have you noticed a pattern in your moods in relation to your menst.cycle? Or some people just have naturally more ranging moods - the same way that some people get wound up really easily and others are more laid-back. It could be stress related, or your bodies reaction to something bad/shocking thats happened to you recently.Saying this, you should talk to a doctor about it just in case it is something more serious. Its unlikely to be bipolar but there are lots of other lesser known but more common problems that could be the cause of this. For example i've had lots of really bad problems with low self-esteem and depression, and im on some medication which is helping me get back to my old self. Your doctor could suscribe this, or at least refer you to a therapist who can get to the root of the problem.I hope this helps :) Good luck. x
