I've been looking at a lot of tattoo related things lately, and my biggest curiosity is the pain. I've heard people say they hurt and I've heard people say it doesn't hurt, even in places that are supposed to actually hurt worse. How bad is the pain for say a medium-small tattoo on the side of the shoulder? Like if I were to roll up a short sleeve shirt sleeve, you'd see it.I really want this tattoo that I've planned and created myself and put a lot of thought into and absolutely know I won't regret, but I don't want to go get it and chicken out from pain.

I have one large tattoo that takes up a substantial portion of my back. It took several hours for the artist to complete it. I won't lie, some parts hurt quite a bit. The most painful areas are those where there's not much "meat" under the skin - just bone - or where the skin is very sensitive.
Even the less painful areas are still no picnic, though. Eventually I got to a point where I found peace within the pain, and the last half hour or so I was so relaxed I almost fell asleep. You just have to remember that the pain is temporary, and worth the end result which is forever.
The best advice I can give is don't consume alcohol or anything beforehand in an effort to reduce the pain. Many tattoo places have a numbing cream that will help if the pain is an issue for you. Afterwards, some ibuprofen or acetaminophen will help with pain & swelling. Keep it clean & follow the artists care instructions!

I will tell you the back of the neck hurts specially next to the hairline and next to the ears. But all in all like everyone says its your level of tolerance in pain.
But if your getting a medium-small size it will be quick and yes you will feel it but once you see the end result whatever you felt won't even matter.
Goodluck!

Depends on your pain threshold. Mine is decently high and it still zinged a bit. But nothing that can't be handled. It will pain a lot less when you're twenty though...I'd wait if I were you (assuming it's even legal to get a tattoo at your age).

I have two tattoos, and I can assure you that they do NOT hurt as much as people say they do! I find piercings hurt much more. You are correct when you say it hurts more in other places, though. The closer to the bone, or the more sensitive the area, the more it hurts. For example, I have one on my nape and I didn't feel a thing. But my other is goes from my wrist to my elbow on the inside of my arm. This one did hurt, and swelled a bit. The shoulder isn't a place that will be unbearably painful, so I wouldn't really worry. Some people have a low pain thresh-hold, and for this reason, numbing cream can be applied to reduce the pain.
But it's as dmartin69 said. The pain shouldn't really matter if you want one that bad.
Pick your design wisely. Keep it for a few months, and if you still like it get it done.

I have my tattoo - medium /small - on my upper arm close to the shoulder - and I did not feel absolutely anything at all. ( And my level of tolerance to physical pain is rather low ). But, maybe I was just lucky, or I chanced into the wizard of tattoing, because, tbh, other people I know describe it as a painful experience.
I did not know you could ask an ink free test but it sounds like an excellent idea.
Anyway- correct me if I am wrong,- would you not be supposed to be 18 before you can get tattoed ?

If you want a tattoo that bad then the pain shouldn't really matter. Its a means to an end.
Most tattoo places will give you a "tester" without the ink to see how you like it. But in the end you just gotta grin and bear it.
How long have you been thinking about this tattoo? If you are serious about this and have any sense, wait for 6 months and get it done then.
