A male reader, anonymous, writes (30 March 2008):

You hurt because of a process known as DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) which takes place in our body 2-3 days after a very heavy work out, or your first trip to the gym.

You have basically torn your muscle fibres and they are now healing which is required in order to tone or put on muscle. As they tear and repair themselves they get stronger and become more use to the stress you put them under, so this will not happen as much the more you go to the gym unless you go crazy on the weights!

Arrr I'm not too sure...cause I'm only 16...but from what I learned from Biology....you noe how when you exercise you have to always "breathe" well...in cellular respiration, your body goes through something called glycolysis..which is the "splitting of glucose" where your body makes ATP (adenosine triposphate)...and after glycolysis...it either goes through with fermentation(if oxygen is absent) or aerobic respiration(if oxygen is present)....with muscle cells...if oxygen is absent..the pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid which has an overall net yield of 2 ATP...while if oxygen is present..the 2 molecules of pyruvic acid are further broken down which releases energy...and then it goes through two processes...the Citric Acid Cycle(Kreb's Cycle) and Electron Transport Chain(ETC) where 34 ATP are released from these processes....so overall net yield would be 36 ATP....I'm not too sure about this but basically...just keep breathing the next time you do exercise

thatgothgirl20 agony auntMaybe you are just not in shape. When was the last time you went to the gym besides yesterday? Get some ice, some ben-gay. Epsom-Salt baths help as well. If you are worried that you might have damaged something go see a doctor. If you want to wait a while first to see if it's just pain, perhaps get a trusted friend or relative to help you out while you recover.

You have my condolensces.

Laura1318 agony auntIf it is very painful, you may have over exercise and torn some ligaments or muscle .

It will heal in time and you need to take a rest until you are well again.

Take some pain killers if the pain is unbearable or go see your doctor for some medicines.

Entirely Unique agony auntAny type of exercise you should always start and finish with a warm up kind of exercise and you should always slowly bring your body into adjusting to the new exercise, I know when i do exercise the next day and sometimes a few more after that I ache and I'm tender so I would think it's normal and according to fitness trainers the best way is to get yourself back in there and work through it few days later your body is adjusted but I would rest and just make sure you haven't really over done it and pulled something.

Hi Hunny

Start of slowly and work your way up, I work out and do a little karate and a few other excercises but I pulled my hamstring a few months back now and it will take awhile for that to heal properly, So even though Ive always worked out somehow I pulled more than I intended but I was doing the splits with my daughter so silly me, And it usually hurts a day or two later so go easy and if your still in pain in a week or more get checked out love TAKE CARE LOVE MANDY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

A female reader, Jmo United States +, writes (7 March 2008):

Jmo agony auntDon't engage in any strenuous activity (and definitely don't go back to the gym) for a few days and see if the soreness subsides. Maybe you overdid it yesterday. Rub some Aspercreme or similar substance on it or use a compress. If you don't slowly start to feel better in a couple days you may have torn or strained something and should consider going to a doctor. Seeing as how you are of high-school age maybe you could go to a school nurse and get an opinion in the meantime.

superbunny agony auntIf I were you, give it a couple of days to see if it's just a little strain, but if it hurts after then you should probably see a doctor who can sort you out a little bit more. Best wishes. :] x

A female reader, Katie-ann United Kingdom +, writes (7 March 2008):

Katie-ann agony auntIt is normal, dont worry. I am not an expert but what I do know is when you exercise whether it be Cardio Vascular or Resistance (weights) you are building the muscles you already have. Through building these muscles they can tear and then repaired to be stronger. That is why you should leave a day or two in between going to the gym or at least exercising the same body parts.

Make sure you walk for at least 5min on the treadmill before you start exercising.

Always warm down after your work out, stretch whole body and walk slowly on the treadmill for 5 min.

For now you will ache for a few days, go swimming. That always helps.

Good luck.
