 Maybe Daniel is not taking the hint :-). Hints are ambiguous, because they are not direct statements but phrases made so that the other person might connect the dots. Maybe he's afraid he's connecting them in the wrong way.
Also, since he works for your dad, he must be VERY afraid of making a mistake with you. He might wonder what would happen to him if you too didn't work out well.
Maybe you can develop a close friendship with him, so you know more about him and whether you have a chance.
