No worries! You are pretty much stuck with it for the next 40-50 years, so you will adjust.
Your body knows what its doing. Technically, it's shedding its uterine lining. Casually, it is being a pain in the butt!! Wear dark jeans (just in case), buy some new underwear specifically designated for the "Dark Week" (that is what I refer to my period as), and make sure you keep Advil handy. Also, remember that your emotions can get a little more intense right before your period starts, so in about 3.5 weeks when you suddenly start bawling at a Kodak commercial or getting super mad that your Mom overbrowned your toast, your period may be to blame. It is okay to go into hibernation mode! Usually the Dark Week means I paint my toenails, read, watch some movies, use it as an excuse to buy some Cheetos without shame.
Talk to your Mom about getting some pads or tampons - whichever one is more comfortable for you. Tampons are not as scary as they seem!. The slim ones are quite easy to handle. But the pad is simple, and especially good for when you're having a "light" day. Make sure you change your pad a couple times a day!
When you are first starting, you can have a little more cramping and tender boobs. It'll get better! You cycle may also be a little irregular when it starts off - your body is just finding its groove.
Even if you are not as shy about telling your Mom, I thought you might like to read other first time period stories. Welcome to the club of women around the globe! Universally, we all share the experience of a first period!

I also used to get heavy periods, they could last for 7 days, the 3 first days to be a drag because I would stain everything and it embarrassed me a lot.
Your body will tell you when the period is close from now on, some signs can include: pain on your breasts, they become sensitive and can feel heavy (they grow a bit); whenever you feel like nothing suits you, or you get moody for no reason, it's also a sign. You may get one or 2 pimples too. The brown spotting and pain down there is the main sign. You may want to have daily pads when these days approach.
I would advice to stick to towels for now as they are easier to keep an eye on, and to keep checking yourself so you know how often you need to change the towel. Don't wait for the last minute as you could have an accident in the middle of a class or street, leaving a big spot on your rear end.
If this happens, try to wash the clothes with Cold water (hot will only make the stain stick more). Just cold water, no soap. If after a while it didn't come out entirely, put some soap on it and get the most of it out. The just put it in the washing machine with the rest of the laundry, or let it dry.
If you consider the pain to be too unbearable, I suggest you keep a box of chamomille tea, it soothes the pain and helps you relax. If you're not allergic, Ibuprofene is also a good ally, it also diminishes the blood flow. If you're at home and it hurts too much, get a hot water bottle to put on your tummy, it can help.
It's normal to feel self conscious and nervous, but it's needed to understand this process of nature, and get accustomed to your changing body. From now on, you should keep a calendar so you mark the dates when it started and when it ended, that way you can keep track of anything not normal when you visit your doctor.
And please, visit your doctor when you plan on starting to be sexually active, so he/she can prescribe you with the pill or other protection methods.
I hope I helped!
xoxo

Periods are a natural process of the body expelling on an underfertlised egg from your body. It's a completely natural process, don't worry all girls get them! Be sure to keep some pads/ tampons with you when you go out and change them regularly because otherwise it'll smell a little. Don't worry you'll soon get used to them. I often take some paracetamol for the mild period pains that you might get, but some people are lucky and don't get any. It's a sign you're growing up so have fun x
