So_Very_Confused agony auntit won't affect your BC pills but it will be a much more dangerous time for you to continue on the pills. Blood Clots and strokes are more common in women who smoke and take BCP

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (27 August 2011):

YouWish agony auntIt won't affect the "birth control" aspect of birth control, but it would exponantially increase the chance for one of the deadly side effects -- stroke. Birth control is bad for someone with high blood pressure, and smoking constricts your blood vessels, putting you at risk for high blood pressure.

Think about all of those smokers that are tempting you to light up. Think about the astronomical amount of money they're smoking, and about how they're wrecking their homes, cars, and bodies by ingesting all of that tar and nicotine.

They would tell you not to smoke, as it's got them by the neck, and smoking is one of the hardest things to break. We live in times where we're well educated on the horrible effects of smoking on ourselves and others, so there is no excuse for us. I have a cousin with lung cancer not because he smoked, but because his PARENTS smoked while he was growing up, so it's not just your life here.

Thelaird1 agony auntAs the others have said, don't start smoking.

I was 11 when I started and continued until I was 21, causing many health problems. I saw sense and quit, which was the best choice I ever made.

At the moment, you are contemplating smoking, so leave it at that instead of trying to quit when it's too late.

There is no true pleasure from smoking, only regrets.

Save the money you would be spending on cigarettes and treat yourself every month you stay smoke free.

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntI would suggest that you focus on the REAL IMPORTANT QUESTION that you are posing here. I will re-state it (the question) for you in a form that may be more helpful... To wit:

"I'm a lovely young woman of age 16-17. At the moment, I am considering to commence the stupidest habit that a person can ever undertake.... smoking tobacco. I am willing to ignore the impacts that it will almost-certainly have on my life.... such as: The EXPENSE of it,... the ODOR (which will turn off at least 1/2 the nice guys I would like to date/marry/have a family with)... and, which ODOR will also depress the value of any automobile that I own (and wish to sell or trade in)... and, ditto for the house where I live. I am also willing to ignore that there is overwhelming evidence that it will be detrimental to my health.... possibly killing me at an early age.... and - if it doesn't KILL me - by hobbling me such that in my advanced years I will have to reduce or eliminate some or all of the activities that I might have enjoyed.... and, possibly, strap me with carrying an ugly oxygen bottle around with me everywhere I go...."

Does this restatement clarify the "question" for you?

Good luck..... smokelessly....

A female reader, Denise32 United States +, writes (27 August 2011):

Denise32 agony auntIt may not affect birth control pills, but it IS very bad for your health - even if you might not feel the effects for years to come. Think brochitis, shortness of breath, wrinkles (yes, from screwing up your face to get smoke out of your eyes!); emphesema, lung cancer......be smart, don't start! Cigarettes are addictive.....
