Then when i sit by him he never really says anything. I guess i just want to know if it would change if i did date him? And if it was a bad idea, because he is my ex's best friend, and i think my ex told him about all the stuff we did when we were dating.Am i just being silly, or would it be a bad idea to date him?

 If you want to date him, maybe its a good idea to talk to your ex and ask if its okay. If he feels uncomfortable about it or gets angry, then its probably not the best idea as yet. Though I've known people to get married to their ex's brother, its not right unless everyone involved is comfortable.
And his distance from you is probably because he likes you a lot. Maybe he finds it difficult too because he has issues about liking his best friends ex!? Thats how I'd feel anyway.
